Just Call Her Amazing Grace!

I don’t know about you, my fellow collegiettes, but I’m a sucker for live music. It doesn’t take much convincing to get me to go to a concert, no matter what artist or band is playing. Naturally, the Grace Potter and the Nocturnals show at Jorgensen this past weekend was no exception.

A friend from home (who, like me, can’t pass up going to a concert) graciously agreed to make a trip to UConn so we could attend the show together. I must admit that I was only familiar with a handful of the group’s songs, including some of their more popular tracks like “Paris (Ooh La La),” “Falling or Flying,” and “Apologies”.

That’s the fun part, though – being unfamiliar with a band and having no expectations. When you go to a live show, you get to see an artist in their true form, raw talent and all. I’ve discovered some of my favorite bands this way, so I was eager to see Grace Potter and the Nocturnals perform.

To emphasize how pleasantly surprised I was, let’s just say that I had chills by the end of the first song. My friend and I looked at each other in awe, reaffirming our decision to fork over $20 for floor tickets. This girl’s got a voice, and it’s the kind that makes you wish you had even an ounce of musical talent. She sang a full set with perfectly controlled and soulful vocals, all while switching between playing guitar, the tambourine, and rocking out on her Hammond B-3 organ.

This Vermont-based five-piece band has more than just talent; they have the personality and spunk to go along with it. They owned the stage throughout the show, displaying a tremendous passion for what they do. Potter danced around and didn’t hold back whatsoever– a true free spirit. Meanwhile, the rest of the band was enjoying every minute on stage. The energy in the room was contagious, as evidenced by the crowd’s reaction to their performance. Everyone at the show, no matter what age, was up on his or her feet dancing and having fun.

The group draws their musical inspiration from blues and classic rock of the 60s and 70s, combined with a hint of funk and the vibe of a jam band. Their sound doesn’t fit neatly into one genre making their music a unique fusion of past and present. The band knows who they are, what kind of music they like to make, and aren’t apologizing for it. A true class act with genuine appeal.

So, for all you music lovers, I highly recommend checking out some of Grace Potter and the Nocturnals’ songs and, if you get the chance, definitely go see them play live. No matter what kind of music you’re into, you can’t deny that they’re a talented group that puts on a great show.

While you’re at it, take a look at Jorgensen’s website to see what music events are coming up. Ticket prices are reasonable, and besides, what’s better than some on-campus entertainment? Plus, you might just discover a new favorite artist!
