Introducing: The Senior Year Bucket List

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

After three and a half years of squeezing in homework and presentations between half-off cranberry vodkas and dollar pizza slices, we find ourselves at a slightly horrifying point in life: second semester of senior year.  Even worse, we’re already about halfway through it.  Reflecting on the times we spent in the student section at football games in 20 degree weather, or waking up for Friday (or Tuesday) morning quizzes after Nickel Night, we have one final task at hand.  Okay well, this, and finding full-time careers upon graduating I guess, but anyway.  The more pertinent task is The List.  One that will prove we’ve lived our eight semesters here with capability, and will be nothing short of inspirational to college students for years to come.

My friends at UConn and I have devised a sort of “bucket list” (since we may as well be dying, right?), and have vowed to make every attempt to complete the items on this list before we graduate this May.  Some items call for a touch of liquid courage, while others will require intense focus (I haven’t gone bowling since I was eleven or so). Some will be downright embarrassing.  No, this is not in reference to Karaoke night- I’m far more concerned about the ice skating.  I’m predicting that hilarity will ensue in all, and as we embark on our mission, i’ll attempt to report all the epic mishaps.

We’re aware that while not all of these items are life threatening, aside from swimming in Mirror and Swan Lakes, most of them are things we feel are imperative to complete before graduating from UConn.  Some will be achieved as a team, and some are individual (or small-party) efforts. Not to get too mushy on you, but they’re also things we want to do together before we go our separate ways in May, and I couldn’t imagine a group of people I’d rather attempt to pull this off with.

Here’s what we’ve got so far, and feel free to leave a comment if you’ve completed any of the tasks (how did it go???), or throw us any ideas you might enjoy reading about.  Be sure to look out for the recap of the first attempted list item, coming soon.

The List:
Go bowling at Willibowl
Sled down Horsebarn hill with trays from the dining hall
Swim in both ponds on campus
Sing at a Wednesday karaoke night at Ted’s (we’ll be taking votes later for a song choice)
Enjoy a beer on Horsebarn Hill at sunrise
Shoot (and make) a basket in Gampel Pavilion
Go ice skating at the UConn rink’s open skate
Sleep overnight in the library (with sleeping bags and pillows)
Make a trip to Mohegan Sun Casino
Create the greatest 90s pop power hour ever made
Climb the Rock Wall at the gym
Meet an official Stool La La Smokebro (may involve traveling)
Participate in a charity event at UConn/volunteer for an activity through community outreach
Leave our legacies through signature on the bathroom door at Ted’s

Ask a study abroad student to come up with a dare for us, and we’ll find a UConn challenge for them (We’ll be taking votes here for this one as well, so get creative!)

Bridget is a senior at the University of Connecticut majoring in journalism and anthropology. Between interning at The Hartford Courant/Fox CT and a nonprofit education agency during the week, she manages a website she founded about cooking quick, healthy meals for college students, and writes for Examiner.com about creating low-budget meals. She is a campus rep for BaubleBar jewelry, and served as a peer mentor to freshmen this year. Bridget studied abroad in London, and interned at a lifestyle magazine over the summer in Shanghai, China. Her free time is dedicated to scouring the Internet for discount designer shoes and following UConn and Boston sports. She's training for a half marathon this spring, which (at times) justifies her weakness for mint chocolate chip ice cream. She hopes to see every inch of the world someday, and maybe write about it too.
