Digital Designer Sqott Gary

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.
Name: Sqott
Sqott is a senior Digital Media and Design major and a Physiology and Neurobiology minor graduating in December 2015.
His talent is out of this world.

After graduation plans: “It depends on what specific field I want to pursue which is most likely going to be contingent on what career opportunities present themselves to me. Something in the digital marketing or advertising field but we’ll see when I get there next December. “

Hobbies: “The internet, football, researching digital culture/trends, collecting things.”

Favorite football team: “I am a very avid fan of the New England Patriots.”

Favorite memory on campus so far: “Waking up with no memory of my 21st birthday.”

Why did you choose to attend UConn? “I’m from MA so location-wise it was a no brainer. I was really impressed with their PNB program and was extremely excited to pursue it (am currently not pursuing it). Winning a national championship in basketball and making it to the Fiesta Bowl in football the year prior obviously helped my decision as well. “

How did you get involved with digital design? “I’m a huge proponent of the creation of original content. The advent of social media right around the time I started learning Photoshop was pretty good timing, I had an endless stream of content at my disposal to work on. I also like posting things on the internet so I kind of needed to hone my skills in order to establish an online reputation.”

How did you decide to change majors and career paths? “Oddly enough it was essentially decided for me, all because of a Coors Light. During my sophomore year I was drinking in my dorm and was alerted to the fact that a friend was in the hallway outside of my room. With a Coors Light in hand I open the door to say hello just as a lower floor RA is walking by and was promptly written up. Being the procrastinator I am I chose to not pursue my sanctions until late in the year. Part of this was a mandatory “engagement plan” that was supposed to get me involved on campus. This was a period in my life where I was really into designing vector portraits of my friends to distract myself from my crippling grades and obvious lack of motivation in the PNB field. Upon hearing this, the sanction facilitator asked if I had thought about pursuing a design track at UConn to which I proposed to pursue it somehow it as my plan for engagement at UConn. I discovered, applied, and was accepted into the Digital Arts minor. After taking one semester of it my Junior year I made the decision to switch my major and minor, and joined the Digital Media and Design department. I’m pleased with my decision, thank you Coors Light. ”

Leadership positions/jobs: “I’ve interned for Connecticut Innovations, the UConn Athletic Marketing department, a Hartford ad agency called GO Media, and a local medical branding company. I’m also the Chief Creative Officer for Mushroom House. “

I’ve heard that something changed you. What was that? “You have heard correctly. It should be no secret that the internet is the culprit of the aforementioned change I experienced.”

It seems like you enjoy the Internet. What is your favorite thing to do while logged on? “Look at memes.”

What is your favorite project you have worked on? “Last semester in my student agency class I worked with a client through CT Innovations and helped produce an animation for them that I’m pretty proud of. Be sure to check it out if you feel like it on http://scottgary.com.”

What is your favorite American family style restaurant? “Thank you for asking. I am one of the premiere Chili’s brand advocates that you may encounter in your travels.”
