Curly Hair Solutions

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

For eighteen years I have been on a hunt for hair solutions to tame my curly locks.  I have tried just about every product, looked through every magazine, read every article and watching excessive amounts of videos on how to manage my hair.  After much effort, I am proud to say that I have officially discovered my perfect combination of products and techniques to tame my hair.  Here, I will lead you step-by-step in a perfect hair care routine.  Before I begin, I would like to remind you that everyone has different types of hair.  My hair is extremely thick, curly long.  With that being said, I think my products and techniques will be useful to those which curly hair- regardless of the thickness and length.

To begin, wet your hair.  I wash my hair every day using any drug store shampoo. Recently, I have found that dandruff shampoo really helps my hair.  This shampoo and conditioner makes my hair a lot softer and less coarse.  Additionally, I feel like it gets rid of product stuck on my scalp better regular shampoo and conditioners.  Head and Shoulders shampoo and conditioner is a great dandruff product that I would highly recommend.

After I wash my hair, I comb a generous amount of leave in conditioner throughout my hair- focusing on the ends.  I recommend using a wide toothcomb to get rid of tangles.  I find that a regular brush damages my hair more than an average comb.  Be sure to get rid of all knots and tangles when your hair is wet.  Do NOT comb or brush your hair when it is dry.  This will only create extra volume and leave your hair poufy and unmanageably.  A leave in conditioner that I recommend is Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Leave in Conditioner.  This is an extremely affordable product that will last you several months.

My next step may sound a bit odd but I promise it works wonders.  The first time someone told me to use body lotion in my hair I looked at her like she was crazy.  After trying it out, I now realize that it is my secret weapon to make my hair look its best.  One I detangle my hair with a wide toothcomb I take body lotion and scrunch it throughout my hair.  I use Vaseline’s total moistures aloe fresh body lotion.  Not only does it smell great but it also maintains frizz and curl.  If you have naturally greasy hair I would recommend using a minimal amount of lotion towards your scalp as it will only make your hair appear greasier.  I have found that body lotion gets rid of frizz and maintains my natural curl.  Once you test out using lotion, you will discover yourself how much of the product you need to ensure that you get the results that you are looking for.

This last step is optional, however, depending on your hair type, it may be necessary.  Depending on the kind of hair day I am having I use a gel.  For the most part, I use L.A. Looks Sport Gel.  This gel keeps my hair in tact and I feel like it acts as a blanket for the other products that I use in my hair.  When you test out this gel yourself you will discover if the product is right for your hair type of not!

If you have somewhere and need to leave your hair down, let it air dry and watch your beautiful hair come to life.  If you’re planning on going to sleep and wearing it down the next day allow your hair to dry for about ten minutes and then braid your hair in one single braid.  When you wake up in the morning your hair will have some wetness in it.  This will allow for you to play with your hair without it getting frizzy and allow you to put more products in it if you feel it is necessary.  These tips and tricks will leave you with fabulous hair that will last all day.

I know that sometimes it is hard to have curly hair.   It is not uncommon for curly girls to want to flat iron their hair to make it sleek and straight.  I have tried a ton of flat irons and always find that it takes up to two hours to straighten my hair!  Extremely recently I found a flat iron that does wonders for me- it only takes me 30 minutes to flat iron my hair!  With this product I cut down on more than an hour of flat ironing my hair.  The Iron is called Remington TStudio Ceramic Pearl Pro Wide Flat Iron.  The iron itself is two inches; this is helpful because it takes less time to do my hair.  I found this product at my local drug store for only $35.00.  This product is extremely affordable and a million times more effective than any other flat iron I have used- even professional products!

Hopefully my tips and tricks are useful to those who have curly hair!  The products I mentioned are extremely affordable and can all be found in your local drugstore.  Play around with these products and find your perfect hair care combination!
