The allegations that have become public in the past few days against Brett Kavanaugh are enough to make any woman shiver. Actually, they’re enough to make any rational person shiver. And while none of the three have been proven to be true beyond reasonable doubt, the point that they get across is clear: this man does not deserve to sit on the highest court in the United States.

Having been accused of attempted rape and clear sexual assault, Kavanaugh’s nomination is highly questionable, regardless of whether or not such claims are valid. The problem here is that it should not require three women coming forward to block his nomination. One should have been enough. Why does it seemingly take an army of women to make any real change? If one wasn’t enough, then three should be absolutely sufficient.

At the time that such acts occur, it is rare that anything is done about them in fear of “ruining the boy’s future”. Brett Kavanaugh’s future at the time was bright and he has certainly capitalized on that fact. 30 plus years later, when the women do come forward, seemingly nothing has changed. The time and place of these women coming forward has no effect whatsoever. The man’s life and success is always at a higher value than that of the woman.

Given that these incidents did happen over 30 years ago, I understand that there is not much basis to go off of. But when you really think about it, these women don’t have much to gain by coming forward. In fact, they have much more to lose. Imagine the worst possible moment of your life being played on every major news network, forcing you to relive it over and over again. Imagine having every aspect of your credibility and character being probed. Imagine being publicly ridiculed by men who have no understanding whatsoever of what you have been through.

And all for what? Potentially blocking Kavanaugh’s nomination. That seems a bit more unfounded than the allegations themselves.

It’s 2018, people. Women have been fighting for equality for decades and yet some still brush over such serious allegations with a wave of a hand and the argument of “boys will be boys”. It’s about time women were truly respected, especially by men who will have the power to alter their rights for years to come.
