What is the Society of Women Engineers (SWE)?

SWE is an organization that allows females in engineering, who are usually underrepresented in most engineering majors, to meet together and support each other, plan events, and help each other with school work.

What type of position do you hold in the organization?

Right now I’m the treasurer; I work with E-Board on various tasks and budgeting such as helping plan for our upcoming conference at MIT this march.  I also work closely with the fundraising chair, handling national membership dues and helping to plan for upcoming meetings.

Are there any upcoming events that you are currently planning for?

We are currently planning for the MYO Program which will be held on April 11th and 12th.  It stands for Multiply Your Options and it is a program that brings about 400 eighth grade girls to UConn between two days. They have the opportunity to participate in various math and science workshops to encourage them to think about pursuing a future career in math and science.  This March while we are at the regional conference at MIT, we are placing a bid to host the next regional conference at UConn in April 2013.  We also hold other social events like member dinners, apple picking, bar nights, and we are in the process of planning a bowling event.

SWE also has a Mentor and Mentee Program. Girls can sign up and are paired with either a Junior or Senior.  The mentor is there for the girls to talk about school, help with homework or just hang out; it’s all up to the mentee on what they hope to gain from the program.  If anyone is interested in joining, email uconnswe@gmail.com.

Caitlin is a Communication major with minors in Sociology and Women's Studies at the University of Connecticut. She has always loved to write, but she caught the advertising bug at UConn and now dreams of creating ads that people will always remember. When she's not studying mass media or reading advertising blogs, Caitlin loves making collages, riding horses, and surprising people!
