10 Ways to Spend a Snow Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

For most college students, snow days don’t mean what they used to.  Usually, regardless of the weather, classes are still being held and you just have to go to work because the people in charge will have it no other way.

However, there are a few days a year when the stars align and the universe sends you a snow day.  Whether you’re a fan of snow or not, the fact still remains that these glorious days can be spent however you want and you don’t have to worry about trudging through a polar vortex to get to class.

On days like these you have several choices.  Some people choose to get ahead or caught up in your classwork while others clean and organize all day.  Those kind of people deserve a round of applause for their ambitious attitude.  If that doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, procrastinate!  There are benefits to studying and cleaning of course, but who wants to spend the one day they have off working?  No one.  So now that we’ve got that covered, what should you do today?

1.) Outdoor Activities

If you’re the kind of person who is full of energy and can brave the cold weather why not grab a bunch of friends and go outside?  Build a snowman or even better, a snow fort.  Make a snow angel, help someone shovel, eat snow but not the yellow kind.  If you don’t have a sled but want to go sledding there are several different things you can do to fix that.  One option is to grab a huge garbage bag and either sit on it to slide down or punch a head and two harm holes in the bag and use it as a wearble sled-poncho.  If you have some kind of tray you can always use that for a sled as well.

2.) Lounge Around

Going outside in the blistering cold is not for everyone.  Sometimes sweatpants and fuzzy socks are the only thing you need to get you through the day.  Stay cozy in a bunch of blankets, hang out with friends, and just relax.  Having a completely lazy day is a great way to recharge.

3.) Eat

Popcorn? Yes.  Pizza? Yes.  Tacos? Absolutely.  Chocolate? Who says no to that?  Wings?  Of course.  Order in with no regrets.  Eat it all.

4.) Catch up on a TV Show

Everyone has a show they’re obsessed with.  Why not catch up, rewatch old seasons, or even start a completely new series?  There is no shame in having a strong Netflix game.

5.) Clear out your Social Media Accounts

It’s good to have a fresh start every once in a while.  Maybe take the time to clean up your Facebook profile by deleting some old pics or going through your friends list.  It’s proably a safe bet to say that you don’t talk to a lot of those 753 friends you have.  Tidying up your accounts is also helpful if you’re trying to look professional for any future employment opportunities.

6.) Read for Fun

With all of the hours spent on reading textbooks or journal reports, it’s hard to find time to sit down with a book that is actually enjoyable.  Even though watching TV and videos is great there’s something to be said for curling up with a good book.

7.) Pick up a New Hobby

Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn how to knit or master a Rubik’s Cube.  Ask some of your friends what their hobbies are, if they’ll lend you materials and teach you how to master the skill.  Hobbies can be anything from puzzles to people-watching.  Just find something you enjoy spending your time doing.  If you’re stuck on ideas here’s a cute DIY infinity scarf craft that’s easy to do.

8.) Pamper Yourself

Have a mini spa day in your dorm with some friends.  Paint your nails, try new makeup techniques and hairstyles, give yourself a facial, take an long hot shower, or make your own sugar scrub for exfoliating dry winter skin.

9.) Sleep

We all try to get the 6-8 hours of sleep per night but who are we kidding?  That rarely happens.  If you wake up to find out classes are cancelled do yourself a favor and go back to bed.  Trust me, you deserve it.

10.) Everything

Why limit yourself to just one or two things that day?  Live it up!  These days only happen every so often so do anything and everything that makes your snow day memorable.

Stay safe and have a great Snow day.
