Tired of trekking off campus for your art fix or just need some inspiration for your own projects? Try the University of Chicago’s very own DOVA Temporary, a highly unknown student art gallery in Hyde Park.
DOVA Temporary is a student art gallery run by the University of Chicago’s Department of Visual Arts (DOVA).
It provides a professional environment for students in the College and Graduate Schools, as well as alumni, wanting to showcase their work in a public art gallery setting. Along with featuring student artwork, the art gallery is also a place where other art-affiliated groups and individual artists of wide variety, both on and off campus, can host their own exhibits and events.
DOVA Temporary is currently hosting an exhibition titled KINEMATIC, by Nicole Mauser. The opening reception was held on April 1st, and the gallery will continue to be displayed through April 23rd.
In KINEMATIC, Mauser plays on color varying the intensity of hues and saturation. Her paintings are vivid, colorful, and the contrast of colors is amazing. The inspiration for her paintings in KINEMATIC actually comes from an interesting story that starts with a screening of a Joseph Cornell film. The next exhibition will be displayed on May 2nd, and is a collection of MFA degree students’ individual thesis exhibitions.
DOVA Temporary is located at 5228 S. Harper Ave, a short bus ride away from campus. With it being so close to campus, and featuring both U of C students’ and other local artists’ artwork there is sure to always be something new and exciting. So go check it out!
