Greek Yogurt Four Ways

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Chicago chapter.

I might be a little late to the Greek yogurt trend and I was even a little hesitant at first. But I must say, it is worth trying. Greek yogurt is high in protein, low in calories and fat (when you buy the zero percent fat kind), and very filling. Oikos by Dannon is just 120 calories per serving (one cup) and for once, one serving will actually leave you satisfied. Another brand I recommend is Fage which has fruit on the side. And as far as yogurt goes in general, Stonyfield is great. Besides just a snack, Greek yogurt is a great start to your day. Here are four ways to eat this delicious treat:

Classic

A bowl of yogurt with some berries and honey is a basic way to do Greek yogurt and is definitely a tasty breakfast option. Top it with granola, fruit preserves, honey, whatever you like, but keep in mind that adding too many toppings can be a bad thing. The healthiest option is fresh fruit and a small amount of honey. Smothering your yogurt in honey and granola takes away form the nutritious value.

Smooth It!

Super simple. Take your “Classic” preparation and toss it in the blender with a little milk since you need liquid to blend, some ice, and you have a meal on the go. Use frozen fruit and hey, you have your ice and fruit in one. Using Greek yogurt takes the breakfast smoothie to a whole new level. Because it is heavy you will be less apt to drink the whole thing before you even get to class. This smoothie will also stay with you for longer. Tossing in some flax seed or another grain is another way to add nutrition. Drink this throughout the morning in class or at work and you’ll stay satisfied.

Spread It!

Greek yogurt can function as a substitute for many things and because of the thick consistency, you can even use it as a spread. Instead of cream cheese on your bagel, try a spread of Greek yogurt. Its tart and tangy flavor will complement the thick bread and its high protein content will your bagel a little more nutritious. It’s also great on toast. I spread mine on a piece of cinnamon raisin toast.

Pair Up

Pair Greek yogurt with some of your other breakfast favorites! Add to really hot oatmeal to cool it down and add some flavor, and it’s a healthier option than all that brown sugar. As a side note, Splenda and other sugar substitutes can be used in oatmeal if you are looking for a low calories sweetener; the oatmeal has enough liquid for the sweetener to dissolve. Or use Greek yogurt as a dip for apple slices!

Try it out and let us know about your Greek yogurt creations!
