How to Make it Through a Mid-Semester Rut

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Alberta chapter.

With the end of the semester so close, it’s easy to start neglecting your responsibilities, pushing them to the very last minute and doing as little work you can get away with doing until finals sneak up. Here are some tips that have gotten me out of my unproductive slumps:

Why are you doing all this anyway?

University is a lot of work. Countless hours spent studying, sleep deprivation and stress are hard enough to put yourself through as is, but it becomes even harder when you don’t know why you’re doing it to begin with. Hold on to your “why” (especially in the times when school makes you want to cry).

Don’t give yourself the chance to opt out

In the times when motivation isn’t enough, discipline comes in. We all have things we simply do everyday and don’t give ourselves the option to negotiate with yourself over, like showering or brushing your teeth. Try adding some academic responsibilities to this list of non-negotiables, for example by making it a point to go to all your classes.

Create a routine for yourself

What time of day are you most productive? How many hours per day would you like to dedicate to studying/reading/working out/Netflix? Schedule in set times to study and do your homework the same way you would schedule a class or a shift at work. Adding structure to your day means less time spent lounging in bed working up the strength to get out and study, and more time spent actually studying.

Find people to hold you accountable

Having friends who will go on study dates with you is just as important as having friends that will go on brunch dates with you, especially if you’re someone who doesn’t enjoy studying by yourself.

Check in with yourself

Meditate, journal, pray, talk to family and friends; do whatever helps you to get back in tune with yourself. It’s easy to just go through the motions, counting down the days till the end of the semester but its so important to enjoy the process and take care of yourself along the way.
