5 Of The Easiest Ways To Be Kind To The Planet

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Alberta chapter.

Let’s face it, we could all stand to be kinder to our planet. The evidence is crystal clear that changes must be made. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to invest loads of time or money–two of the things that we students never seem to have enough of. Read on to learn about five of my favourite Earth friendly products.

A Good Reusable Water Bottle

In my opinion, the best reusable water bottles on the market are S’well Bottles. While these bottles can be on the pricey side, they can often be found on sale, and will last you for years to come. These bottles are incredibly well insulated, keeping whatever you pour in cold for 24 hours and hot for 12. Best of all, they come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and fashionable prints! That being said, any old water bottle will do, with crowd favorites such as Hydro Flask and the infamous Gatorade Squeeze Bottles,  just grab, go, and refill as needed!

Metal Or Silicone Straws

Surely we’ve all seen the videos circling around social media depicting the impact that plastic straws have on the oceans–specifically on marine life. However, while paper straws are an awesome alternative, you have approximately 15 minutes to down your drink before they turn into mush. As such, I believe that there are a variety of reusable straws that serves as a much better alternative. Whether you’re drinking boba, sipping on a fountain drink, or want something compact for on the go, you’re sure to find something out there that meets your needs and budget!

An Assortment Of Cloth Grocery Bags

Not only will the use of reusable, cloth grocery bags help to save the planet, but it will also help to save your wallet as many chains have begun charging for bags. The options here are truly endless, with most stores offering a variety of styles and sizes. If you want something that folds down to save space, BAGGU’s reusable bags will easily fit into your backpack or purse, so you always have a bag for on the go. Additionally, there are a variety of mesh produce bags on the market, to help you cut back on plastic even further!

A Cute Reusable Coffee Cup

As a working student who often has some sort of caffeine in my hand, the consistent use of my reusable coffee cup has without a doubt made the biggest impact in my journey to reduce waste. Glass, plastic, or ceramic, the options here are literally endless. While my favourite comes from Starbucks, my friends have raved about the KeepCup. Whichever cup you choose, you can either toss it in your bag so it’s ready to go, or do what I like to do by using your cup to take a beverage from home with you on the go, saving the planet and you wallet!

An Assortment Of Eco Friendly Lunch Supplies

If you regularly pack your lunch like I do, purchasing some sustainable containers, reusable utensils, and a lunch bag will not only save the planet, but your wallet as well. Glass lunch containers are not only better for the environment, but your health, as they will allow you to avoid dreaded BPA’s. To go along with your new eco containers, a reusable utensil set will not only keep your utensils in one place, but prevent you from tossing single use plastic forks and knives in the trash. To store all of this, might I suggest a thermal lunch bag, or a sassy Blue Q Handy Tote. Not only are these products practical and sustainable, but they will last you for years to come!
