The Top Ten Most Iconic Chandler Bing Moments From ‘Friends’

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TX State chapter.

In October 2023, we had to say goodbye to iconic actor Matthew Perry. In addition to giving us the character Chandler Bing, Perry also raised awareness about the veracity of his illness, alcoholism, through his book, interviews and created the https://time.com/6329820/matthew-perry-addiction-recovery-remembrance/.

Matthew was responsible for bringing joy to millions of fans who followed the Friends series that was launched in September 1994. To this day, the series continues to be one of the most watched series on Max. On October 29, 2023, the day after the death of the actor, the streaming platform revealed that it had the biggest spike in viewership since the special reunion episode that was released about two  and a half years ago.

I gathered the most iconic and funniest moments of the character Chandler Bing. Aside from his sarcastic humor, Chandler is the character who, in my opinion, had the most memorable character development among the six friends. The character who was afraid of commitment and was unable to have lasting relationships was also the first character who was first to take initiative in declaring his love for Monica Geller, not to mention his relationship with all of the other five friends.

Season 2, Episode 13: “The one after the Superbowl: Part 2”

This is an iconic episode featuring actress Julia Roberts, who plays the character Susie Moss. She and Chandler develop a mutual romantic interest, as the two already knew each other from school and end up meeting again on a film set.

However, the end of the episode has a plot twist with Susie getting revenge for the years she was bullied at school because Chandler was responsible for it. As shown in the video, the episode ends with Susie stealing Chandler’s clothes at the restaurant, which leads him to have to walk naked in front of everyone to his car.

Season 6, Episode 24: “The one with the proposal”

I believe that all the episodes in which Monica and Chandler are together as a couple are iconic by themselves, but it is impossible not to be moved by the marriage proposal episode. After all the drama that happened at the restaurant, such as Richard, Monica’s ex-boyfriend, showing up and postponing the proposal, Monica, at the end of the sixth season, finally asks for Chandler’s hand by candlelight and he obviously says yes.

Season 4, Episode 15: “The One with All the Rugby”

Oh! My! God! In the first season, Chandler has a relationship with the iconic Janice, who is known for her unique voice and laugh. For fear of her reaction, Chandler is unable to break up with her during some of the episodes in the first few seasons. In fact, in season —, episode15, he travels to Yemen so he wouldn’t have to break up with Janice. It all started with a lie that he was going to be transferred to the country forwork and, obviously, Janice wanted to accompany him until the final moment at the airport.

Season 5, Episode 14: “The One Where Everybody Finds Out”

Ross’s reaction to seeing Monica and Chandler kissing for the first time is one of the most memorable moments in the series. Being the last to find out, Ross saw the couple kissing through the window of his then new apartment and made the entire building hear the phrase “Get off my sister!” Ross’s reaction of getting angry and then happy when he heard Chandler say he was in love with Monica made this scene memorable.

Season 4, Episode 12: “The ones with the ones with the embryos”

“The ones with the ones with embryos” brought a new era to the series. In the episode, Monica, Rachel, Joey and Chandler participate in a contest that involves high stakes such as keeping the girls’ apartment, which is bigger, or for the boys to get rid of the chicken and duck (that were Chandler and Joey’s pets). In a victory for Joey and Chandler, they move into the bigger apartment and continue with the chicken and the duck. This episode is also marked by the nickname that the TV delivery man calls him “Chanandler Bong”, instead of Chandler Bing (in addition to putting the miss in front as if he were a woman).

Season 4, Episode 8: “The One with Chandler in a Box”

In this Thanksgiving episode, Chandler punishes himself after kissing Joey’s girlfriend at the time. He decides to spend the entire holiday inside a big box to make Joey see how sorry and guilty he feels for what he did. With moments of great humor, as shown in the video, Joey eventually forgives Chandler and they return to their friendship.

Season 2, Episode 4: “The One With Phoebe’s Husband”

“If I’m going down, I’m taking everybody with me.” In this episode, the friends start to reveal secrets about each other until Mônica reveals the big controversy about Chandler: he has a third nipple! Everyone becomes obsessed with the information and the character ends up showing his third nipple in front of everyone. Chandler tries to change the subject and talk about Joey’s big secret, but in the end, Chandler’s secret ends up becoming the biggest joke.

Season 5, Episode 2: “”The One With All The Kissing”

Before everyone found out about Monica and Chandler being a couple, the two went through embarrassing situations that required both of them to improvise and  lie to their friends. In this episode, before Chandler leaves the apartment, he ends up kissing Monica goodbye in front of Phoebe and Rachel. Upon realizing what he has done, he ends up kissing them both and leaving the apartment. Everyone’s confused reaction clearly shows that perhaps this wasn’t the best way to get around the situation for Chandler.

Season 3, Episode 11: “The One Can’t Remember Which Sister”

In this episode, Chandler gets very drunk at a party and ends up kissing one of his best friend’s, (Joey’s) sisters. However, the plot develops due to the fact that Chandler cannot remember which sister he kissed. The episode involves this attempt to keep the secret so that the Tribbiani family doesn’t find out, since they have all started to see Chandler as a member of the family too (including Joey).

Season 5, Episode 8: “The One With All the Thanksgivings”

Finally, my favorite scene from my favorite couple is in season five:the first time Chandler tells Monica that he loves her and shows his feelings towards her. The situation in itself is comical, since Monica’s head is inside a turkey with sunglasses on it, a hat, and she is dancing in an embarrassing way. Chandler can’t help himself and accidentally says “I love you.” After that, the rest between the two is history.
