When most people think about Fashion Week, they automatically think of New York, Milan, or Paris, but New Orleanians need to look no farther then their own backyards. A recent addition to the Fashion Week list, the Big Easy is quickly showing the world that along with Mardi Gras, delicious food and the infamous Bourbon Street, it boasts a flourishing fashion scene.
New Orleans Fashion Week Fall 2011 displayed the innovative designs of up-and-coming designers. I had the privilege of attending three shows this week, with each line unique but as amazing as the one before. The first show was blackout by Ashlie Ming, which featured flowing, easy-to-wear designs in bright colors and classic back; the perfect label for the laid back fashionista. The second show I attended was Varela + Brooks, which flaunted their trademark “whimsical in a concrete jungle” look, modernizing the timeless simplicity of southern style. The third show I attended was Matthew Arthur, whose female models sported attention-grabbing aqua lipstick and 80s inspired, youthful pieces.
All in all the shows were fabulous, the ambiance was electric, and the clothes were fantastic. If you missed the fall show, look out for NOLAFW Spring 2012!
