Six Tips for Maintaining a Healthy College Lifestyle

College can be a stressful and nerve-racking experience, especially for freshmen. The extensive workload, desire to earn good grades, and pressure of making friends are just a few of the many things that may keep us preoccupied. Through all the pressure, it’s easy to lose sight of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. After reflecting upon my first semester at Tulane University, I’ve identified a few quick and easy ways that students can keep themselves looking and feeling great, both physically and mentally.

  1. Never skip breakfast

A student’s day is determined by how they start it. Breakfast replenishes your body after a (hopefully) good night’s sleep and gives you the energy you need for your long and busy days. There are so many healthy breakfast options that I have discovered, including yogurt with fruit and granola, cereal, oatmeal, or a quick on-the-go protein bar that you can keep in your backpack if you’re running short on time!

    2. Drink water

Water is the healthiest choice that keeps your body hydrated and fully functioning. An insulated S’well bottle can be easily carried around throughout the day for both hot or cold beverages. Avoid those sugary lemonades and instead carry around a fashionable water bottle that you can refill in between and during meals all day long.

   3. Hit the gym or jog around campus

Working out is important for you both physically and mentally, keeping your body in shape and relieving stress. From running on the treadmill, exercising on the elliptical, or crunching your abs, there’s so much the campus gym can offer. The gym also allows you to sign up for exercise classes such as spin and boxing. And if you have a busy schedule, just pull up a Youtube video in your dorm room and break a sweat yourself! You’ll feel great after.

4. Check out a local grocery store

There is such a variety of items offered at all grocery stores, but be sure to keep an eye out for the healthy snacks that will keep you satisfied and energized throughout the day. Whether you choose to online shop or go to the actual store, there are healthy and delicious options such as cold cuts, vegetables, yummy chips, dips, and fruits. Look up a healthy recipe and try it out.

5. Get enough sleep

College weekdays can be long and tiring. After efficiently getting all your work done and using your time wisely, make sure you get to bed at a reasonable time. There will be some nights that will be later than others, whether you’re hanging with friends or studying for an important test, but take advantage of the less intense nights by going to bed early and getting a good night’s sleep!

6. Walk around

Although not every day may be warm and sunny, step outside and go for walks with friends on the free days you can. Whether it’s an early morning over the weekend or an early weekday night, take time to look around your beautiful campus while effortlessly working out.

During the college journey, everyone discovers their own healthy lifestyles and it is important to guide and support one another to promote and inspire healthy lives for all!
