The Current: Breast Cancer, Always in the Spotlight

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tulane chapter.

Have you watched a professional football game recently?  If so, you may have noticed the players decked out in everything pink, from their cleats to their sweatbands.  There is even a pink ribbon painted on the field.  Clearly, pink is not a color usually associated with football.  All these temporary changes are due to October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

On Sunday, October 16, I participated in the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Purchase, New York.  There are many other walks sponsoring the same cause being held throughout this month.  I highly encourage getting involved in any way possible, from buying a pair of jeans at Bloomingdale’s (in which 15% of the proceeds are donated) to donating to the Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation.

Breast Cancer affects everyone, from family members and friends to the stars we watch on television or in movies.  Most recently, E! News anchor Giuliana Rancic announced she had breast cancer.  Singers like Sheryl Crow, Kylie Minogue, and even Melissa Etheridge, who performed with a bald, due to her chemotherapy, at the 2005 Grammy’s.  Elizabeth Edwards, wife of presidential hopeful John Edwards, recently passed away after a long battle.  The fashion designer Betsy Johnson has beaten it.  Actresses such as Christina Applegate and Cynthia Nixon are currently in remission.

So spread good karma and donate to the National Breast Cancer Foundation  today.  Every penny counts towards keep our relatives and celebrities healthy and happy.
