When I began my freshman year at Tufts this past fall, I felt like something was missing. Is the school too big? I asked myself. “Have I just not yet met enoguh peple with different interests and backgrounds? Don’t get me wrong – I loved my classes and my friends, and I was having a great time at Tuts, but it wasn’t until about a month ago that I really felt completely happy. This change came when I joined a sorority. I know what you’re thinking: Tufts? Do NESCAC schools even have Greek life? I doubt that many girls apply to Tufts primarily so that they can join a sorority, but I can assure you that the sisters of A Phi, Chi O, and AOII, consider their sorority life to be a meaningful part of their college experience. Now that it has been a month since Bid Day, I can say that my involvement in Greek life has truly broadened my Tufts experience.
It has not only given me me more than 100 new Facebook friends and names to learn, but also exposed me to people who I wouldn’t have met, were they not my sorority sisters. Through weekly meetings and various bonding activities, I am beginning to get to know the 43 other girls in my New Member Class. While I was a bit intimidated at first, I have begun to feel more and more comfortable texting any one of them, whether to invite them to join me for a meal, or ask them to borrow a dress for a formal, etc., etc. Joining a sorority has also been a great way to meet junior and senior girls who can share their own college experiences with me, and be great role models for me and my fellow New Member Class members. I am so happy I made the decision to join a sorority; it’s hard to remember why I even considered not rushing this winter!
