How to Navigate Fall Fashion According to the Weather

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tufts chapter.

The first day when you get hit with the coldest air you’ve felt in months, you are completely unprepared. You may think to yourself, “Well here it is, the end of summer, onto fall.” This may be something you dread because of the cold weather, or maybe something you can’t wait for because ALL THINGS FALL. Pumpkin spice lattes, crunchy leaves, Halloween, and of course, fall fashion!

However, understanding the fall weather can be a daunting task. Each morning, getting ready, I seem to question what the weather means. Am I going to be freezing if I don’t wear a jacket? Will I be overdressed and sweating if I do? Here are some guidelines to help you get through it:

If it’s 60-70 degrees and sunny, expect it to be relatively nice out. Still, there might be a chill in the air, especially if it’s windy, but for this type of weather, a long sleeve shirt or a t-shirt with a jacket is perfect with long pants. This is also a great opportunity to wear a skirt or a dress while you still can. I would recommend wearing stockings with it if it’s on the low 60s side.

If it’s 50-60 degrees, then try to bundle up a little more. A long sleeve with a light jacket will probably work best here. My thinking is that it’s better to be warm than cold. And on that note…

If it’s 40-50 degrees, be aware this will feel so cold, that you’ll wonder how it can get any colder (but believe me, it does). Here, I would probably wear a heavier long sleeve shirt or sweater with a heavier jacket or maybe even a winter coat.

Anything less than 40 degrees, wear multiple layers and warm accessories. This is definitely time to bring out your winter coat, thermal leggings, blanket scarf, beanies, and gloves. Hopefully, it won’t get that cold until winter, but with our environment all out of whack, it’s best to be prepared.

A perfect solution for when you really can’t figure out what to wear according to the weather: layering! There are multiple ways to layer and it’s all up to you. For example, you can wear a t-shirt with a sweater over and a jacket and if your too hot, just stuff one of the pieces into your bag or hold it and you’re good to go.

Good luck! Unfortunately, it only gets colder from here!
