4 Tips for Gym Confidence

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tufts chapter.

As hard-working, fit collegiettes, going to the gym is a key part of our daily routines; however, the difficult part is deciding what exactly to do once we get there. Sure, we could do our usual run on the treadmill and a 5 minute ab circuit. But why not take a step into the weight room with all the gorilla juiceheads…in their sweaty cut-offs…casually benching what looks like 400 lbs like it’s their job? Many collegiettes worry that guys are going to laugh at them because they can’t lift as much weight as they can, or are nervous that they’ll do an exercise completely wrong and embarrass themselves. However, following these simple tips can help eliminate those worries and give you the confidence you need to train with the boys:

1. Do Your Homework:

Before you head off to the gym and start hitting the weights, go online and look up some workouts that you might be interested in trying. There are many YouTube channels, such as BeFit, that demonstrate how to lift properly. Knowing how to exercise properly is very important because it reduces the likelihood for injury and shows the jocks around you that you know what you’re doing!

2. Check Your Outfit:

Admit it, you want to look flirty and cute at the gym—but you also don’t want to be that girl that looks like she’s trying too hard. Try to avoid dressing too skimpily and, instead, rock a cute pair of shorts or yoga’s with a college t-shirt. Guys will be more likely to respect a collegiette who works out properly rather than one who has no idea what she’s doing in minimal amounts of clothing. Check out stores like Dick’s Sporting Goods or Victoria’s Secret for some cute apparel!

3. Make a Killer Playlist:

Create an energy-intense workout playlist that you can listen to before you go to the gym. That way, you can focus on your workout and not have to worry about socializing or feeling awkward in the weight room. Plus, who doesn’t love to listen to awesome music while getting in shape?!

4. Bring a Friend:

If you happen to have a friend (girl or guy) that’s an athlete or is really into fitness, see if you can buddy-up and go to the gym together. Explain to them that you’re a bit hesitant when it comes to lifting weights and ask if they wouldn’t mind showing you some of their workouts. They’ll be flattered that you’re asking them for tips, and working out is a great way to form friendships!
