Must Watch Disney Halloween Movies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Trinity chapter.

Disney Halloween movies are something to be celebrated.  We laughed, we cried, we ran to our parents, we totally ignored bad acting and plots that would never make sense and yet our eyes were always glued to the screen.  Disney always does it right, especially when it comes to Halloween.

Hocus Pocus (1993)

When I think Disney Halloween, I think Hocus Pocus.   Three centuries after the Salem Which trials, three witch sisters resurrect on Halloween night to create this classic movie.  Did I know this plot line as a child, no?  All I cared about was what crazy ingredient they were putting in their potions next.  And of course the plot was thickened with a group of teenagers.  Over the years Hocus Pocus has secured a great following and people of all ages will watch this movie, no matter how old it gets.

Halloweentown (1998)

Another Halloween classic is Halloweentown, released in 1998.  This Halloween thriller follows magical siblings as they discover a crazy town full of surprises. As the name implies, this town is filled to the nines with everything Halloween.  Disney certainty does it best.  Watching this movie you realize how cheesy and unbelievable some of the scenes were, but as a child it was all I ever needed.

Moms Got a Date With a Vampire (2000)

Like most Disney movies, the title of the movie usually gives you a good idea of what the plot entails.  This is no exception.  Charles Shaughnessy and Caroline Rhea come together to give us this Halloween spooker.  This original film gives us three siblings who try to convince their mom that she is dating a vampire.  Were they right?  You’ll have to watch to find out!

The Haunted Mansion 2003

This Disney original stars the one and the only Eddie Murphy.  Nuff said.  One Halloween, the Evers family decides that a little more family time needs to be in order. What they didn’t expect what visiting a mansion with floating heads, crystal balls, and a vast amount of dark secrets.   This movie allows for some comedy to accommodate the spook. Definitely a great Halloween watch.

Frankenweenie 2012

Of course the oldies are hard to beat, but Frankenweenie gives them some good competition.  Disney knows how to hook em’.   Filmgoers were enthralled by the fact Tim Burton’s name was attached to this Disney movie and they had to find what twist he was up to this time.  A parody of the 1931 movie Frankenstein, this gives the viewers a more lovable dog whose scientist owner fields a formula to bring his pet back to life.  This movie would definitely be recommended to those looking for some up to date animations.

Into the Woods 2014

Last, but definitely not least, Into the Woods gives us the a creative and riveting plot line with Disney’s most up to date cinenematics. Adapted from the late 1980s Broadways hit musical, this movie has a cast worth recognizing.  Stars including Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick and Johnny Depp come together to haunt even the most daring dreams.  This fairy tale has a great following and would be recommended for anyone to put on his or her Halloween movie list.

If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried.
