Why Snapchat Is Going Bye-Bye

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

After big celebrities like Kylie Jenner and Rihanna publicly dissed Snapchat, people have started to question whether they should continue using the app or finally say goodbye to it.

Here’s the tea on what’s happened with the infamous app.

Team Snapchat has been in some hot water ever since they made an update to the app’s layout. Users from all over the world complained about how much they didn’t like the new design, with some going to the extreme of making a petition on Change.org in order to bring back the old update.

One of Snapchat’s many upset users was none other than Kylie Jenner, who shared her frustrations on Twitter. She wrote, “Sooo does anyone else not open Snapchat anymore? Or is it just me…ugh this is so sad,” and because she’s a member of one of the most famous families in the world, her single tweet cost Snapchat $1.3 billion in market value. Ouch, and the impact of celebrities doesn’t stop there.

In early March, an ad for the game “Would You Rather” appeared on Snapchat asking users whether they would “slap Rihanna or punch Chris Brown.”

The ad was in poor taste since Rihanna was involved with domestic violence in her relationship with Chris Brown back in 2009. Rihanna herself saw the ad and was understandably upset about it. In an Instagram story, she told her fans, “throw the whole app-ology away.” Again, Snapchat went down in market value.

The latest celebrity to join the Snapchat strike is former supermodel and TV personality Chrissy Teigen. She tweeted out last week that she was done with the app because of “the update, the constant complaints of people not being able to find me, plus the Rihanna poll…no Bueno.”

At this rate, Snapchat will be going down the drain. After these three huge celebrities left due to the design and controversy, people are just waiting to see who will leave the app next. Will you?
