Since arriving at college, I found myself scared trying to figure out how I would have a presence on campus or make any type of connections. It started with mass following people on Instagram over the summer and building relationships while still being shy and introverted. I came to college with a mission, join clubs, make friends, and have fun. This is how I did it.

I have always been introverted since the beginning of time. However, the summer before coming to Philly, I decided that I was going to be extroverted or, at least, fake being an extrovert until I didn’t feel awkward about it. I compiled a list of clubs and organizations I wanted to join once I got to campus and started DMing people on Instagram to make friends so I wouldn’t be alone during this scary time. I soon realized that joining clubs was more comfortable being virtual. There was never a hesitation to go to a meeting worried about what you’re wearing or how to approach someone during the meeting. Being in your own space made it a whole lot easier.

Not only was I providing myself something to do outside of classwork to keep myself busy and entertained, but I was also making connections with people, which is a quick boost of serotonin for me. Since joining some clubs, I have made close friendships and received guidance from upperclassmen on how to move through my first year of college. Not only will joining an extracurricular club allow you to keep yourself busy and make friends with people with similar interests. This also helps build up your resume. Building up a professional resume is crucial to landing amazing internships and jobs in your career field.

Joining Her Campus has been a thought of mine since I saw the Instagram stories from last year; pre-pandemic. I was excited to join a group of girls passionate about sharing stories and outstanding individuals. I was shocked, to say the least, when I got a staff writer position. The same can be said for other organizations I joined on campus. Just the thought of connecting with such amazing people and doing something I enjoy is literally a dream come true.

I highly recommend looking for clubs and organizations on your campus to join. Whether you’re on campus or not, formulating relationships with like-minded people in a time where it seems like this is our new standard, is imperative. It allows you to live your life to the fullest while staying safe. Put yourself out there, make the first move, and try to be confident in yourself!
