The New Skincare Brand Made Entirely for Slugging

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

Sluggin took the internet by storm. if you didn’t know how to slug there’s a new brand that’s got you covered. This new 3-step routine is not only effective but made solely to simplify the process.

Last year “slugging” had the internet in a chokehold. The common Korean skin care technique —slugging — describes the last step of your evening skincare routine where you slather your face with an occlusive moisturizer. With over 820 million views on TikTok, #slugging has become an integral part of many people’s weekly routines to avoid overnight water loss and achieve a more hydrated complexion. While the original viral videos used Vaseline or other petroleum-based jelly as their occlusive layer, there’s now a beauty brand dedicated entirely to the slugging process.

Meet Futurewise, the new hydration-focused skincare brand solely created to make slugging an easy process. Created by the founders behind the viral pimple patches, Starface, Julie Schott and Brian Bordainick, capitalized on the viral trend, but understand where slugging came from mentioning on the website:

“While the term itself has only recently grown in popularity, the Native American Seneca tribe discovered one of the earliest versions of this practice – all the way back in the 15th century. They applied petroleum jelly from oil pits on their skin to protect wounds and keep it hydrated. Petrolatum-based products began to rise in popularity in the late 1800s, as more people discovered these salves could help smooth roughness and calm irritation. Over time, these products have become versatile medicine cabinet staples for many, notably communities of color, due to their accessibility. Using petroleum jelly from head to toe has been a go-to practice for generations of Black women. This has also been a household practice within other ethnic communities and immigrant families throughout history.”

The three-step system is made up of a combination of humectants, which provide hydration, emollients that soften and moisturize the skin, and occlusives that deliver layers of intense hydration.

Slug Boost Mist ($22) a light spray that contains a trio of humectants with different molecular weights, that prep your skin for the rest of your routine. After using it your skin is moist, but not wet, and ready for step 2.

Slug Cream ($24) is a “big hug for your skin barrier.” It conditions the skin with a vegan triple lipid complex to preserve moisture. Lipids are natural fats in our skin that hold the cells together and maintain their integrity. Applying lipid-rich skincare helps replenish and restore these healthy fats that are often depleted by external factors, like cold weather.

Slug Balm ($24) is the final step to your slugging routine. It’s a non-sticky jelly balm made with a plant-derived, lightweight formula that melts into the skin, and creates a “cocoon-like environment” for your skin to repair itself. Water naturally evaporates from the skin, and this increases in less than optimal conditions the  Slug Balm, creates an occlusive layer that helps prevent this water loss from occurring.

If you’ve ever wanted to “slug,” you should definitely get Futurewise. The three products are a soothing, hydrating way to end your evening skincare routine, and they also work individually. The nostalgic look of the pink and red packaging are an instagram worthy, cute addition to any vanity, and all three products are vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free, sulfate-free, fragrance-free, non-comedogenic formulas. Available on their website, at a price that won’t break the bank, but will have your skin looking like a million bucks.
