Temple’s Closet Must-Haves

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.
Women are notorious for having closets jam-packed with clothing and often most of the pieces hanging are unworn.   Every girl has a go-to outfit that makes her feel like a million dollars, but in order to put together such an amazing ensemble they must start with the basic closet essentials every girl should own.   A few girls around campus answered what their favorite pieces are out of their closet and what they elieve every girl should have in their own.

Darylynne Smith decided her stockings and dress socks are her favorite articles from her closet.  She joked about “sounding like a grandma,” but added that stockings and socks will keep you warm in the colder months as well as add some flare to an outfit.  She said she has stockings in every color and even some with patterns and sparkles!  As for the socks, she says she has an embarrassingly large collection and wears them almost every day because they are comfortable and cute with just about any pair of shoes.

Her list of essentials included: black stockings, black heels, a red dress, and comfortable jeans.

Marissa Carrigan stated that her oversized tee shirt dress is her favorite piece in her closet.  She loves this piece because it can be dressed up or down with the right accessories. She likes to wear it with a sweater and converse on a dress down day, but when she goes out she slides on a pair of heels to transition the outfit.

Her essentials include: ripped boyfriend jeans, an oversized cardigan, a plain white tee shirt, patterned loose fitting shorts, and converse.

She said, “You need to have clothes that can be dressed up or down with a pair of shoes or accessories. Yet, you still need to have one piece that makes a statement: the shorts.”

Gabi Meyers listed five of her closet favorites: an octopi patterned sundress, a playful pleated mini skirt, a filmy lace layered spaghetti strap tank top, a raccoon fur coat, and an old man inspired flannel.

She says she loves the sundress since she bought it in ninth grade but can still wear it with everything for every season.  The pleated mini is patterned with girls and she loves it because it is fun and flirty without trying too hard.  Her “filmy” tank from Urban Outfitters is another favorite because it is an easy go to piece for a night out.  One of her aunts gave her the raccoon coat.  She loves this piece since it makes a statement, and it tends to be a great conversation starter.  Her flannel is great because the colors go with everything and is all around a perfect go-to.

Her closet essentials for every girl include: a dress that can transition throughout the seasons, one menswear inspired piece to balance a feminine outfit, a lacy going out top that will never fail you on a Friday night, a slim straight jean “to get you through the skinny, to flare, to mom, to 90s boy trend times of denim,” and a nude pump since they elongate your legs and easily pair with any outfit.

Although a lot of the girls didn’t list exactly the same closet essentials, they all agreed every girl should own pieces that work for every season and can transition from day to evening attire.  The basics are crucial such as a plain tee, the perfect pair of denim, and a go-to pair of heels, but having a nice statement piece is important as well.

Keep in mind, these pieces can come together to create multiple outfits when paired correctly.

There is no need for the overstuffed closets filled with unworn clothing when it is so easy to throw together a cute outfit from a few essentials.
