Red Band Society Episode 8: “Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

“You can’t always control what goes on outside, but you can always control what goes on inside.” The episode picks up with the inhabitants of the hospital basking in excitement over Charlie’s new condition.

Meanwhile, Dash is seen recovering from his health scare in the last episode and Leo, Jordi, Emma, and he automatically plan to come up with the greatest present for Charlie. And Hunter embraces a woman after speaking to Kara, which leaves her wondering if her chances with him are no longer there.

Back in Charlie’s room, viewers get to witness Charlie communicate with the doctors by blinking. As they rejoice, they discuss the arrival of Dr. Naday; a prestigious neurologist from Africa who is supposed to arrive at the hospital just to examine Charlie and McAndrew promises to keep his ego at bay.

Jordi is still struggling with Emma’s decision to stick with Jordi, but he tells Dash that isn’t the problem; he just doesn’t know how to act around Emma and Dr. Naday arrives at the hospital with a surprisingly careless attitude.

Nurse Brittany tries to give Kara advice on her situation with Hunter, and although Kara seems reluctant, she seems to be willing to try. We later find the two meditating and the girl who was seen speaking to Hunter magically appears. After Kara finds numerous ways to insult her, she is shocked to find out the girl is actually Hunter’s sister, Ashley.

While out with the boys, Emma finds herself eating to please Leo, but she doesn’t seem okay with it. While at a pet store looking for a puppy for Charlie, Jordi makes an attempt to talk to Emma but she seems cold and he takes it as rejection.

Dr. Naday seems to care less about Charlie’s test results and instead focuses on taking selfies and playing the guitar with Charlie’s father. When McAndrew walks into a jam session, McAndrew breaks his promise and tries to interfere with Naday’s process.

Kara finds out that Hunter has leukemia and his sister is willing to give him half of her liver. She seeks Kara’s help in getting Hunter to stop being angry and accept the donation, but not before things take a turn for the worse. She dresses as a skater girl (“Hunter’s normal type”) but he doesn’t take the joke well.

During the day of events, Leo, Dash, and Jordi find themselves going to a strip club, “Today, we become men.” Their age betrays them though and the security guard doesn’t budge when he hear Leo’s cancer story. Emma skips this part of the trip and attempts to find a bathroom.

McAndrew goes to Dr. Grace in an attempt to get Naday sent away to which she confirms her fears about him as well and questions her role as the administrator, but McAndrew comforts her, much to Nurse Brittany’s dismay.

Kara confronts Hunter about his attitude because she’s “not into idiots who turn down their sister’s liver,” but is shocked when Hunter opens up about his brother who never woke up from a coma after drowning and he doesn’t want to risk his sister’s life if he takes his sister’s organ, “I’d rather take my chances waiting for someone else’s organ.” Kara ends up defending Hunter when Ashley confronts her as he overhears.

Jackson gets upset with Naday for turning the hospital into “Coachella,” but she is proven wrong. He’s giving Charlie a present to look forward to, “Healing is not only about the medicine, it’s about the heart.”

Kara and Hunter share a kiss on the rooftop and Emma is seen angrily entering the hospital. Their day ended with no extravagent gift for Charlie and her eating disorder seems to be pushing her over the edge. When Nurse Brittany brings her food, Emma frustratingly throws the food around the room.

The show ends with Kara and Hunter continuing their moment, the boys giving Charlie and iguana, and Emma cleaning up the mess she made. “The best things happen when you don’t try to control them.”
