Red Band Society Episode 10: “What I Did For Love”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

The episode starts off with the teens reflecting on Emma’s departure, which leaves them questioning, “Who will be next?”

Dr. Naday plays chess with Charlie and we get to see him communicate by using his eyes to type on a computer. When Emma returns home, she reunites with her sister, Finn, and her mother, whom Emma hasn’t seen since she entered the hospital. And though her parents show concern over her body weight, her father brushes it off, “She’s always been thin.”

Back in the hospital, Delaney sends Jordi a customer looking to buy drugs and he sends her away before it gets out of control. Kara eavesdrops on Hunter’s meeting with McAndrew and overhears that he will be going home, forcing her to hide her heartbreak.

Leo calls Emma to make sure that she’s okay, much to Kara’s dismay, and to clear their heads, they give themselves a senior ditch day. At home, Emma’s mother opens up about not knowing how to handle Emma and her reason for not visiting her, but it doesn’t go unnoticed when she brings up Emma’s grandmother and quickly brushes it off.

Nurse Jackson seems to be falling for Naday as she puts on lip-gloss before visiting Charlie’s room and, to both of their pleasures; Naday agrees to have dinner with her.  Kara and Leo finds themselves at Kara’s school to “watch the world spin madly on without us.” They confide in one another about their fears and she plans another surprise for him.

Emma finds out that her parents believe that her grandmother had an eating disorder and they realized it after her death when they found rotten food all over her home. Emma lashes out at her parents for keeping it a secret from her to which her mother responds with, “I wasn’t going to allow you to be damaged.”

Just as Hunter is about to leave the hospital, his pager goes off, signifying that he will be receiving a new liver. Brittany tells Kenji and Jackson about her unintentional one-night stand with McAndrew, and with the many failures of office relationships, Jackson starts to question her own love life.

Jordi allows McAndrew to perform a risky surgery remove two tumors from his brain with the hope of being the next person to go home. Kara reminds Leo of his old self by bringing him a soccer ball and she tells him to go home and forget about all of them, but he says there is no way he could forget about her. Emma listens to Leo’s voicemail and thinks about calling him back but is stopped after being interrupted by Finn who invites her to dinner.

Hunter gives Dash a letter to give to Kara in case he doesn’t wake up and Emma is forced to eat more food than she is accustomed to while at dinner with her family. McAndrew confronts Brittany about their small problem compared to the children in the hospital, “Get over it or get out.” Jackson lets her fear get to her and cancels her date with Naday.

After their long day, Kara and Leo let their emotions take over and they end up having sex. Emma has a meltdown and tries to call Leo, but with him being occupied, she sticks a toothbrush down her throat to regurgitate the food she just ate. McAndrew has to tell Jordi that his not being emancipated yet is keeping the state from allowing him to perform the risky surgery.

The episode ends with Jordi taking matters into his own hands by deciding to sell pills in order to make enough money for his emancipation fee. Jackson and Naday share a surprise kiss in Charlie’s room and Leo and Kara continue to have their moment. Lastly, after seeing Emma break down, her father finds her on the floor of her bathroom.

Sadly, this may be the last episode fans of the show get to see since the show has officially been cancelled due to low ratings. A cliffhanger like this is never the best way to end a show; hopefully FOX decides to air the last three episodes!
