When the weather gets cooler, it tends to affect our skin by getting drier than usual. Here are five tips on how to upgrade your skincare routine and form new habits as we head into the winter season. These are some products that I suggest as well as some lifestyle tips for the colder weather!

Tip #1: Use a gentle face soap

Face cleansers with extra ingredients that treat things such as acne tend to be a lot more drying to the skin. Using a gentle face soap that has no fragrance is usually a better way to go to keep your skin hydrated. I use Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser that cleans my face without drying it out.

Tip #2: Use a serum before moisturizer

Serums are good for a skincare routine, since they usually have a specific ingredient that helps your skin such as Retinol or Vitamin C. They also make your face even more hydrated after combining with a moisturizer afterwards. I use Eva Naturals Vitamin C Serum.

Tip #3: Use a thick moisturizing cream instead of lotion

Lotions tend to be not very thick, which is fine for warmer months. But for the colder months, it’s better to have a thick cream for your skin that hydrates more effectively. The brand Eucerin has multiple thick creams to choose from that are fragrance-free and safe to use on your face.

Tip #4: Use sunscreen

People normally think of using sunscreen when it’s really hot and sunny outside, but it is also important to use even when it is cloudy or cold. There are still UV rays that affect your skin, especially your face. Too much exposure to the sun can make your skin dry, so make sure to use sunscreen at least on your face. I use Neutrogena Clear Face Sunscreen Lotion SPF 55, which I like a lot, because it does not leave a white cast on my face like a lot of other sunscreens tend to do.

Tip #5: Stay hydrated

My last tip is to make sure to drink a lot of water. I try to make sure that I drink enough water throughout the day. Not only do I feel better overall, but I have also noticed that it has kept my face looking hydrated and clear.

Since everyone deals with this time of year and the effects of cold weather, I hope this helps you change up your skincare routine so that your skin is healthy and hydrated. Though it’s hard to maintain during this time of year, I think using these tips will help a lot with preventing dry skin.
