Aerie Launches a New Campaign for Body Positivity

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

Not everyone has the body of a supermodel, and that is normal. The media often conveys the idea that women need to have the “perfect” body, one that resembles the models in advertisements. They highlight a thin and toned body with no curves.  However, the majority of women do not have the super skinny body of a supermodel, which is completely normal.  In many conditions, the way in which models diet is very unhealthy. This idea only promotes the idea of eating disorders and unhealthy practices.  Curves are natural and women should learn to embrace them. That is where Aerie steps in.

In honor of National Eating Disorders Awareness week, which takes place from February 21 to February 27, Aerie has launched a new campaign called “Strong, Beautiful, ME.”  This idea branches off of the company’s original body positivity campaign known as “#AerieREAL,” which was started 2 years ago.  The store has partnered with the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) to help raise awareness for the cause and for anyone who may be affected with an eating disorder.  The company is dedicated to creating body positivity and confidence among women.  According to The Gloss, Jennifer Foyle, the Aerie global brand president, said, “We are excited to continue our partnership with NEDA for the second year in a row. Our work with NEDA continues to allow us to provide information and resources to our customers helping to reduce the stigma often associated with eating disorders, as well as reinforce our commitment to #AerieREAL and authentic body positivity.”

Aerie does not Photoshop or airbrush any of their models because these touchups creates a false perception of what women are supposed to look like. They use models with natural curves rather than forcing the women to strive for an unhealthy weight.  In order to promote the idea of body positivity, the Aerie website displays encouraging messages, such as, “There is no such thing as a perfect bikini body,” and “That means no retouching, and thanks to stories and support, it’s also about body positivity and loving your REAL self. Inside and out. The real you is sexy.”

Aerie has created a shirt to embody the message of their campaign.  The limited edition, short sleeve shirts are gray with the words “Strong, Beautiful, ME.” 100% of the proceeds from the sales of the shirts will be contributed to the National Eating Disorders Association. Aerie’s campaign started on February 18 and will run until March 3. The shirt can be purchased online
