A Review of Scarlett Johansson’s: The Outset

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

Is the A-list celeb’s new skincare line really worth it?

It seems as though almost every celebrity has come out with a new makeup or skincare line these days. With all these celebrity brands, it’s hard to decipher which ones might actually be worth your time and which ones are just a way for a celebrity to make more money. One of the more recent brands to enter the beauty industry is Scarlett Johansson’s, The Outset. According to Johansson, The Outset is “the white t-shirt” of skincare. It is for those who want a simple routine without all the hassle; something that will easily blend in with other products they may already be using. I’ve personally purchased and tried all the products and I’m ready to share what I’ve learned.

As someone who’s never had particularly difficult or sensitive skin, this was the first real skincare line I had ever purchased. Besides your everyday store-brand face wash, I have never had a real skincare routine. However, since having to wear masks all the time, I’ve noticed myself breaking out more- as I’m sure many can relate to and decided it was time to invest in some real products to benefit my skin. Being a big Marvel fan, and a fan of Scarlett Johansson, I saw that she was coming out with her own line, which immediately sparked my interest. I purchased the three main products she was selling and have been using them for about three months now.

The products range in price from $32 for one bottle of cleanser to $105 for the entire 3-piece set. The first product in the brand’s recommended regime of usage is the Gentle Micellar Antioxidant Cleanser composed of simple ingredients that are gentle on the skin. The cleanser is meant for both morning and nighttime usage. The micellar cleanser has no scent, so it won’t create a possible irritant to the skin. Every time I use this product, it leaves my face feeling fresh and rejuvenated. I love the fact that it doesn’t leave my skin feeling dry, an effect many other face cleansers have had on my skin in the past. This cleanser is extremely hydrating and makes my skin feel less oily, while also providing it with proper hydration. The micellar antioxidant cleanser is by far my favorite product among the 3 staples of The Outset.

The next product that is recommended to be used after the cleanser, is the Firming Vegan Collagen Prep Serum. This product is meant to be used to “fortify the skin” and prep it for the final step. Made with Mexican Arnica flower extract and black quinoa extract, the prep serum “locks in vegan collagen” to “improve elasticity and help smooth the look of wrinkles”. What I love about the prep serum, is that I only need a tiny dollop of it to use on my entire face. This helps make the product last longer, and it also feels gentler on my skin since I only need to use it in very small portions. I also love that the creamy substance of the serum does not make my skin feel sticky or oily like I thought it would. While I typically use the product in the evening, The Outset states that the serum can be used throughout the day, whenever it feels like your skin may need a boost of hydration.

Finally, the last product within the 3 piece set is the Nourishing Squalane Daily Moisturizer. This is meant to be the final piece of the puzzle, as it is the last product to be used after both the cleanser and the serum. The moisturizer is made to “reduce the look of redness and improve the skin’s texture and tone”. Personally, I love how lightweight and thin the moisturizer feels. I only need a few pumps of it to feel refreshed, and it always leaves my face feeling smoother and softer than it was before. I’ve had issues in the past with moisturizers making my skin feel sticky or oily after using them, which has caused me to stray away from moisturizing my face altogether. Yet, The Outset’s Squalane moisturizer makes my skin feel smooth and hydrated, rather than leaving that all too common sticky feeling. It is definitely a must-need to end my day with.

Overall, I would highly recommend The Outset to someone who is looking for a new skincare line, or even someone who has never had a regimented skincare routine and is looking to start one. It is a simple and easy-to-use regime for those who are new to skincare and are not sure where to begin. It fit in well with the other products I already used, such as my makeup remover and acne prevention wipes that I use occasionally. I had no bad reactions to using these products together. The products are also cruelty-free, vegan-friendly, nut-allergen free, and dermatologist tested. All important factors that I know people can be concerned with when looking into buying new beauty products. The Outset’s user-friendly website can provide even more information about the line and how it came to be if that’s something you are interested in. To answer my own question: yes I do believe this A-list celeb’s skincare brand is worth it!  The Outset is a wonderful, simple, and easy-to-use skincare brand that should not be overlooked just because it was founded by a celebrity.
