With millions of people stuck inside due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak, the quarantine days seem to be getting more and more uneventful. It is easy to watch the days pass by staring out of the window or at a laptop screen, but why not make your quarantine fly by with a few fun activities? There are so many quarantine activities that are easy, cheap, and time consuming. Here are just a few of them:

  1. Try New Recipes

There is so much time available in quarantine. This is the perfect time to try out new recipes that seem interesting. Even if you mess up, you’ll still have time to retry.  There are never ending ideas for cozy breakfasts, warm dinners, and fall desserts.

  1. Play Board Games

Although this idea sounds pretty basic, it is the perfect way to bond with friends and family. Board games will give you a break from the phone, laptop and television screen. Any type of game will work: puzzles, monopoly, or checkers. This is the best way to take advantage of being stuck inside with friends or family.

  1. Clean!

Why would anybody want to spend a day cleaning? It sounds so uneventful! This might be true, but if you throw in some headphones and start your favorite playlist or podcast, it’ll make the experience so much better. Cleaning is the perfect way to clear your mind. You’ll find yourself feeling productive, energized, and healthier when finished. Besides quarantine, what other excuse is there ever going to be deep clean the whole house?

  1. Call Friends and Family

Don’t forget, your other friends and family are also stuck inside. A call to the family member you haven’t talked to in a month is always appreciated. Use this time to video chat with friends. Zoom activities and online games are not only fun, but they’re also super easy to organize.

  1. Journal

This is a once in a lifetime experience. Journal about your feelings, experiences, friendships, or any other ideas. In a few years you can look back and reflect on such an interesting time in the world. Another way to journal is scrapbooking. Take pictures, decorate the pages, and write. Being creative is always a fun and time-consuming activity.

  1. Do Yoga

Yoga is super easy to do in small spaces. If you’re cooped up in a small apartment, it can be difficult to help relax the mind and get your body moving. Yoga is a great way to do this. It stretches the muscles and lowers stress levels.

  1. Watch a TV Series

There are so many streaming services available to watch shows on. Starting a TV series is a good distraction from the current situation. If you choose to do this, make sure it’s at a healthy pace. Don’t binge watch all day! Make sure to get up and move your body.

  1. Have a Self Care Night

First you’ll need the essentials: face masks, bath bombs, nail polish, etc. These are super easy to find in bathroom cabinets or online. This is relaxing, cheap, and the perfect way to wind down from a stressful day.

  1. Order Takeout

Being in quarantine calls for a good meal, and ordering takeout is always fun! Take advantage of the opportunity if you’re stuck inside. Look up new and interesting restaurants that you haven’t been to. It’s possible that you could find your new favorite spot in town.

  1. Catch Up on Sleep

Take this time to nap or catch up on any missed sleep. Sleep is so important for us. This is the perfect time to create a healthy sleeping schedule. Find what works best for you and continue it!

Quarantine can be boring, but choose to spend the time wisely. Many people struggle to find stuff that will help pass the time. However, there are so many activities that are fun, cheap, and good for both mental and physical health. Keeping your mind and body active are two of the most important things to remember during such a confusing and stressful time.

Sophia is a final year English student at the University of Nottingham. Her biggest claim to fame is having met one of the blokes from Horrible Histories on the tube once - when she says 'met' she really means she waved awkwardly. She is often found with her head in a book, pen in hand, watching The Office (US, obviously), eating or trying to tame her massive hair. Sophia hopes one to become a publisher so she can read all the books sent her way as her full time job.
Delaney Mills is a Senior at Temple University majoring in Communication Studies. She's has a love for fashion and Harry Styles. She can usually be found at the Bagel Hut on campus or in her bed watching New Girl. Follow her on Instagram @duhlaneyyy!!
