  Books, no matter the length, all possess the ability to take our emotions and twist them into so many different directions. I for one, have always been enamored with the idea that one book, a story, a journey, could tap into someone’s true test emotions. In recognition, here are the top five books worth shedding tears over:

1. Me Before You:

This romance novel, written by Jojo Moyes, revolves around a quadraphonic and the struggles of the end of his journey alongside his new caretaker Louisa Clark. Throughout the book the trials and tribulations of these two characters if beautiful as it is heartbreaking and will most definitely leave you crying long before the last page. 

2. The Nightingale:

Written by Kristin Hannah, this fictional history piece entailed a tale of two french sisters who balance freedom and their morals during the Nazi occupation of WWII. One sister, Vianne,  goes through these hard times alongside her daughter and learns to overcome her fears from a responsible and parental perspective. Unlike her sister, Isabelle’s free spirit aids her in her journey to help the resistance in anyway she can; if you have a sister or any feelings whatsoever, this book with leave you sobbing. 

3. Beartown:

Fredick Bachman writes about a small town in which hockey is the apple of everyone’s eye. The whole town revolves around who they believe to be their saving grace: a teenage superstar athlete named Kevin. They know he is going pro, and with his talents in use the town’s revenue with increase. But in a town like this, word gets around, and the shortcomings of this prodigy will be what tears everyone apart. This novel toys with your emotions and you understand the perspective from the citizens of the town as well as the girl that pays the price for someone else’s mistakes: this story will have you angry and tearing up over what these characters have to go through. 

The Lovely Bones:

In this weird, tell tale mystery novel written by Alice Sebold, entails a young girl who is killed by someone in their small town. Her journey in the afterlife and looking down on her family as they attempt to figure out who killed her and why is devastating and tragic. This heartbreaking novel with tears streaming down your eyes throughout the entire book as you watch the family unravel.

Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows:

J.K. Rowling is nothing shy of talented as she finishes the end of her series with one of the most tragic and satisfying endings of all time. In the novel Harry, Hermoine, and Ron go through their final battle with darkness, and Lord Voldemort is determined to kill “the boy who lived” once and for all. The hills and valleys of this book will leave you on a rollercoaster of every emotion, touching base on romance, excitement, fear, suspense, etc. This must read novel is the definition of tearing-eyed smile: a bittersweet end.
