Sarah Scholz: Behind the Scenes of TCNJ’s Vagina Monologues

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TCNJ chapter.

Vagina. It’s a word most people don’t want to say too loud. It’s a word that’s guaranteed to raise eyebrows and make your parents blush. And it’s a word that Sarah Scholz has no problem using.

In fact, Sarah’s use of the word vagina is part of a massive movement to empower women. Sarah is the head director of TCNJ’s 10th annual performance of the Vagina Monologues, which strives to end violence against women.

For those collegiettes who aren’t totally sure what the Vagina Monologues are, have no fear – we’ll answer a few of your questions here… but we certainly hope you’ll head to the show to learn more! The Vagina Monologues were created in the hopes of ending violence against women by sharing the stories of many beautiful, unique women across the globe. This year, TCNJ’s campaign (known around the world as the V-Day Campaign) is donating the proceeds to Womanspace, OAVI, and women/girls in Haiti.
So why is Sarah this week’s celeb? This Women’s and Gender Studies and Journalism double major actually became interested in WGS and the Women in Learning & Leadership program after seeing a performance of the Vagina Monologues during her freshman year at TCNJ.

Sarah speaks fondly of her experience with the V-Day Campaign, saying, “I am so inspired by the directors and actresses that I have worked with both last year and this year.  These women have so many unique stories – it is amazing to see them all come together to help tell other women’s stories during the performances!”

Perhaps one of the most inspiring aspects of Sarah is her dedication to all things related to the empowerment of women (and also to cats, pizza, and Star Wars). She is the creator and editor of her own feminist zine, “Girlfriends” (which you can admire and learn more about here:). This vegan master of vagina origami is seeking a higher degree in Women’s and Gender studies, and we TCNJ students can certainly expect Miss Scholz to continue being an active part of making significant changes in our world.

The bottom line: check out this year’s performances of the Vagina Monologues February 24th 8PM, February 25th 8PM, & February 26th 2PM, where you can see this campus celebrity in action. Tickets are now available at TCNJ’s box office!
