Recent Events from the Greek World: The Underground World of Philanthropies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TCNJ chapter.

It’s mid-semester, which means it’s high time for Greek Life philanthropy events. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Greek Life, philanthropy events are productions that Fraternities and Sororities host to raise money for their given cause.

These events come in a multitude of forms: game shows, competitions, guest speakers and t-shirt sales. So here’s a playback of the last few weeks of philanthropy events you may have missed out on. Greek organizations are invested in their philanthropies, and are always looking to raise money for them.

If you’ve been around the stud in the past few weeks, you may have noticed an increased number of people wearing “boobies” shirts. These shirts aren’t just for guys who are looking to praise the female anatomy, they’re Zeta Tau Alpha’s (ZTA) fundraising shirts for their 2011 Pink Out Week, which was Oct. 3 to Oct. 7. The week supported the ZTA’s Think Pi
nk Foundation, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, and Christina S. Walsh Foundation. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and within this past week, the girls of ZTA have “Kicked Away Cancer” with a kickball game on the sundial lawn, presented a breast cancer awareness program, with guest speaker Dr. Wund, and “Manicured for a Cure” in the Stud for just $5! Just by looking at the amount of “boobies” shirts, it’s safe to say that ZTA had a great week!

This past Thursday, Oct. 6, Sigma Pi held a schoolwide Spelling Bee. The night started out with easy words for the group of contestants, like “unicorn,” “latex,” and “chub,” but quickly escalated to trickier words, such as “postcoital” (whatever THAT means). The proceeds raised money for ALS Association, which fights Lou Gehrig’s disease.

On Wednesday, Sept. 28, Delta Zeta held their annual philanthropy event, Turtle Tug, where teams compete against each other, playing tug of war over a kiddie pool of green JELL-O. All proceeds from this event went to The Painted Turtle Camp, which is a summer retreat in Lake Hughes, California, for chronically ill children. Staffed by California’s top medical professionals, The Painted Turtle Camp allows children to participate in all types of summer camp activities, free of charge.

Keep an eye out for all upcoming Greek Life events!
