Clubbing at the Student Activities Fair

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TCNJ chapter.

Imagine one day out of the semester when TCNJ’s athletes, writers, artists, musicians, volunteers, Greeks, activists, student leaders, hobbyists and even Harry Potter enthusiasts gather in one place for the express purpose of recruiting YOU. That moment has arrived with Wednesday’s Student Activities Fair, at which 175 student organizations will line the pathway from the Student Center to Alumni Grove and actively seek members.

Whether you’re a freshman looking to get involved or an upperclassman hoping to expand your repertoire, the Student Activities Fair poses the extraordinary opportunity to meet the members of each club and learn more about what they do.

Her Campus has a few tidbits of advice to ensure your first – second, third or even fourth – Activities Fair is, in the wise words of Borat, a “great success!”

1. Hand out your email address like it’s your number in a bar full of exceptional hotties. Removing yourself from the email list-serv is easy (be persistent, if necessary!), but you can’t go back and make up those first few meetings missed because you were too shy or close-minded to sign up in the first place. Stop by and learn more about every club or activity that even vaguely sparks your interest.

“The Activities Fair is a way to put a face to the clubs and activities on campus,” says Angela Chen, co-president of Amnesty International. “Sometimes the websites may not be updated, so it’s good to hear from members who are active and passionate about their work.”

2. Surprise yourself. Sign up for at least one club you would never in a million years think to join. If you’re a total sports nut, try one you’ve never played before. Always wanted to juggle? Head on over to Juggling Club! Skeptical about Greek organizations? Talk to the sororities and fraternities before passing judgment! Don’t limit yourself to what you did in high school. Sure, if you were the star of the soccer team and yearbook editor, by all means sign up for those clubs, but also try your hand at something like Habitat for Humanity or the Order of the Nose Biting Teacups. By expanding your options, you’ll meet people you never would have expected, some of whom may become your closest friends.

3. Be social. Introduce yourself to the club members at the table. Take our advice and sign up for a few clubs. it will be the people you meet that stick in your head. “Everyone at the tables are looking to talk with you and are very excited to share what their club is all about,” says Megan Ho, senior accounting major and member of the Women’s Club Rugby team. “Definitely don’t feel shy to approach people and get the most out of it.”

There is a place for everyone at TCNJ, from Outdoors Club to All College Theater, Club Rugby to Club Fencing, The Signal to Her Campus TCNJ, Habitat for Humanity to Ultimate Frisbee, Catholic Campus Ministries to Chabad, PRISM to WSTR College Radio, and so much more. Keep an eye out for Her Campus TCNJ, we look forward to meeting you!

Jessica is one half of the fantastic duo founding Her Campus on the leafy suburban campus that is The College of New Jersey. A Journalism major and Communications minor in the Class of 2012, she is a native of Pennsylvania and an adoptive resident of New Jersey. That's why she can't fist pump, but can pump gas. Before Her Campus, Jessica was a newspaper reporter, communications assistant and world traveler, having studied and interned abroad in London. When she's not writing or talking up a storm, Jessica can be found bargain shopping, catching up on a good book, fiddling with her camera or attempting to stay in shape. Other passions include hummus, tickling those ivories on the piano, meeting new people and all things Her Campus.
