Wait… So Sam Smith and Adele Aren’t the Same Person?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TAMU chapter.

Celebrity conspiracy theories

They’ve been swarming the internet since before it was even created. Hugh Jackman is apparently an alien disguising himself as a “hugh-man.” Beyonce was never really pregnant. Avril Lavigne died in 2003 and was replaced by a look-a-like. Stevie Wonder isn’t blind. “The real Slim Shady” actually doesn’t exist because the Illuminati killed him… so he sadly can’t stand up. Brittany Spears was being paid by the White House to cover up their mistakes with her scandals. “Oops! [She] did it again.” Marisa Tomei never really won an Oscar because, just like Lea Michelle, the announcer couldn’t read. And, if we consider NASA a celebrity, Niel Armstrong never landed on the moon. It was all fake.

Oh yeah… and I forgot; the 5 time Grammy Award winner, Sam Smith, is actually just Adele in drag. Here’s everything you need to know about this riveting conspiracy theory.

The beginning…

In 2018, @jesse21valona tweeted a video of Adele’s 3 time Grammy Award winning song, “Hello,” tuned down. The product? Sam Smith.

And so a conspiracy theory was born…

Over the years, fans have gathered as much evidence as possible, and you’d be surprised at what they found. Excluding their undeniable talent, both stars were born in London, they produce similar styles of music, and up until the 2023 Grammy Awards, they had never before been seen in the same room.

On January 23, 2023, the “Stay With Me” singer appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show, where they were asked about the craziest rumor they’ve ever heard about themself. “Everyone seems to think that I’m Adele in drag,” Smith responded. But despite all hope, they denied the theory stating “What a fabulous compliment, but I am not Adele.”

So this theory’s a lost cause… right?

You’d think, but many are still holding onto hope that the two are the same person. @ariareari recently posted a TikTok, showing both Adele and Sam Smith accepting their Awards at the 2023 Grammy’s. The caption, “finally, i can sleep well.” But guess who’ll be having nightmares tonight… the comment section.

Multiple people noted how both artists were dressed in red, and one person argued that if Katy Perry once did a costume change in 10 seconds, Adele can too.

So even after all of the comparisons, audio editing, and internet scouring, I guess we’ll never really know if Adele and Sam Smith are the same person… unless they do a show together. Here’s to hoping!
