Over the winter break, I planned a trip to Corpus Christi with my partner. We discussed expenses and tried to keep it as budget friendly as possible. The main way to save money was to go camping instead of staying at a hotel or AirBnB. There were various campgrounds, some free and some not. We opted to stay at Mustang State Park. It cost $20 per night, but it was so worth it to be able to have access to a bathhouse.
The ups and downs of beach camping? Sand gets everywhere, but you can go starfish hunting in the morning.
We stayed a total of two nights — a sufficient amount of time for me as I had never been camping before and wasn’t used to it.
But we didn’t stay at the beach the whole time. When coming into town, we got coffee at Driftwood Coffee Company and visited TAMU’s Corpus Campus. We walked around for a bit and then proceeded to do work within the library.
On the second day, we went downtown and explored that area. My highlight of the day was split between coffee at Lucy’s Snackbar and the Art Museum of South Texas. Lucy’s Snackbar has wonderful coffee, reliable wifi, open seating, and a great vibe. I highly recommend it. The Art Museum of South Texas was filled with interesting art, a lot of modern pieces. Some were absolutely stunning. It’s only $4 for students but we were able to get in for free. It is also located right next to Bayfront Park and the seawall, a nice place to walk around.
The final day we lazied around the beach, watching the waves. We even took a brief dip in the water! But by a certain point I was itching to sleep in a bed and have a hot meal — there were materials to make sandwiches but I didn’t want a sandwich filled with sand.
Overall, it was a splendid, short trip. I would definitely go again when the weather is warmer so I can enjoy the water more.
