On the night of December 8, 1980, John Lennon was signing autographs for fans outside his New York home when he was fatally shot five times by a man named Mark David Chapman.
If you know anything about rock and roll music, then you know that one of the biggest rock bands to invade the United States was The Beatles. Of the band were Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, George Harrison, and John Lennon. They had millions of loving fans from around the world that fell in love with their music. They were both idolized and adored. Unfortunately, that would be the downfall for The Beatle’s member.
The Fab Four, as they were often called, were together as a band for only eight years when they split up in the year 1970. John continued to make music years after as a solo artist with wife, Yoko Ono. During the Vietnam War, John and Yoko played active roles in trying to persuade people to protest the war. They displayed peaceful protests of bed-ins where ever they resided.
One of John’s most infamous songs was Imagine, which became a popular anti-war song during that time. After the release of his new album and the song, John Lennon was thrusted back into the public eye.
On the fateful day of John’s death, Mark David Chapman was waiting outside John and Yoko’s New York City apartment with one of John’s albums held in his hand. Along side him was a crowd of other fans eagerly standing by for a chance to meet John and get his autograph. Once the couple exit their apartment building, John goes on to meet the awaiting fans and signs Mark’s album.
After the couple leaves, Mark remains standing outside the building until John arrives back home. Surprisingly, Mark considered himself a fan of Lennon’s. He loved The Beatles and continued to support Lennon when he went on to go solo. That night, that same crazed fan killed John Lennon and was pronounced dead.
