On Sunday, February 2, 2014, Her Campus UT decided to make Valentine’s Day cards. Not for our own sweethearts, but rather for our local seniors. Just one more way we can give back to our community.
In Tampa, FL, our local Meals on Wheels alone serves approximately 750 meals a day to homebound individuals. Sadly, many of these men and women are oftentimes left alone and don’t get regular visitors other than those who volunteer to deliver their meals. It is so heartbreaking that it is easy for us, myself included, to forget there are people who are lonely and unable to spend time with family and friends.
Interestingly, this year, the Meals on Wheels Association of America teamed up with DoSomething.org and Mentor Up to inspire teens to make Valentine’s Day cards to deliver to individuals served by Meals on Wheels. Also, singer and actress Victoria Justice has joined forces with these organizations to spark even more teens’ interest to get involved with this good cause.
This is where Her Campus UT came in. Our lovely Vice-President and Senior Editor, Jordan Sypek, who learned about this via Facebook, brought this to our attention, and we were more than happy to help out! So, we got to crafting, and produced many sweet and cheesy Valentines, all of them written with encouraging messages and three fun facts about ourselves.
I think I speak for all of us when I say that it felt so nice to be able to something so seemingly simple to bring a smile to someone’s face and brighten his or her day.
Have a Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!
