As news of Tim Tebow’s trade to the New York Jets have died down in the recent weeks, now is an appropriate time to assess why Tebow is a good fit for the Jets.
1. Tebow Mania: Move over Jeremy Lin, there is a new star in town—New York is now all about the Tebow show! The Jets held a press conference on March 26th, 2011 to announce Tim Tebow as the back up quarterback for Mark Sanchez. When is the last time you have heard of a press conference for a back up quarterback? Tebow just has that affect! So many journalists showed up to the press conference that it needed to be held in a larger room.
2. Broncos Mistake: The Denver Broncos screwed up in letting Tebow go. Peyton Manning was drafted to the Broncos on March 19th, 2011 many people did assumption was Tebow would learn under him. To our surprise on March 21st, 2011 Tebow was traded to the Jets. Tebow knew there were things in his game he had to work on in his offseason and he took the offseason to grow as a player. After the playoffs blowout to the New England Patriots, Tebow began workouts and training with UCLA football staff. There has not been an NFL player to work harder to prove himself, but apparently, that was not enough for John Elway.
3. Jets Advantage: Tebow in one word is excited and he has every right to be after being traded to a team that actually wants him. Tebow increased the Bronco’s franchise tremendously in one season then is has in the last decade. Elway seemingly unappreciative of this never once publicly thanked or praised Tebow for a winning season and leading the Broncos to the playoffs. Elway often time publicly doubted Tebow’s offensive skills and consistency, never fully supporting Tebow’s efforts. Elway knew before we all did that he was going to get rid of Tebow.
What the Broncos lost, the Jets gained. Tebow kept it classy and wished the Broncos, but the fight the Jets displayed, showed he would be accepted and wanted by this team.
4. Why Tebow Will be the Starting Quarterback: Mark Sanchez is the starting quarterback for the Jets now, if he wants to continue as the starter he has to come out and play his best ball yet or Tebow will replace him. Sanchez is signed for another three years with the Jets but he has shown no progress in establishing himself as an elite quarterback. In fact, Sanchez seems to have regressed; he has caused the team too many games in the previous seasons–something that is frustrating to fans, players and coaches.
Tebow on the other hand is proving himself to the team and coaches bringing in publicity for the Jets but not taking advantage of it. Although he is a solo brand, Tebow is very much a team player, one that is growing and can possibly lead the Jets to that playoff season is Sanchez screws it up, again.
Although I am the bitter Philadelphia rival of New York associated sports I vowed to follow Tebow no matter where he landed. Many others will this season too, whether as a fan of the Jets or to see what Tebow does.
