A whole new world on campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Syracuse chapter.

Classes, exams, homework — we all come to school for a lot more than that. College is
the prime time to explore other cultures as well as dive into your own and attend events
that you may have never had the opportunity to take part in. There are all kinds of events on
campus that can broaden our minds and help us think differently or more deeply at little or no cost. From lectures to plays and guest speakers, it just takes a little investigating to find something that will spark
your interest.

1) University Lecture Series: http://lectures.syr.edu/current-lectures
The University Lecture Series brings a very diverse and inspirational group of
speakers to our campus. The series kicks off this year on Sept. 27th with Maria Hinojosa, one of the most influential Latino/a journalists in the country. Attend her lecture and learn about how she received such a prestigious recognition! In November, Bob Herbert, a journalist and author shares his stories about writing for The New York Times for 18 years and his plans for the future.

2) Community Folk Art Center, Inc. (CFAC): http://communityfolkartcenter.org/
In conjunction with the Department of African American Studies, this center brings a
different and brilliant new look at artists of the African Diaspora. Through exhibitions,
visual performance art, film screenings, and gallery talks, among other things, they engage
the Syracuse University campus, community and region to critically think and appreciate
the African Diaspora.

3) State of Democracy Lecture Series:

Part of the Maxwell School of Syracuse University Campbell Public Affair Institute,
the series brings to our campus an innovative way to discuss public issues that span across
interdisciplinary social sciences. What a better place to encourage debate on issues that
affect our present and future?

4) Whitman Video Guest Speakers:

Don’t have time to sit in on a lecture? Watch these videos on your own time and
pace, while still enriching your knowledge or hearing about entrepreneurship for the first
time. Whitman provides videos of previous speakers from CEOs, investments, entrepreneur
boot camp and celebrated alumnus.

5) 2011-12 Ray Smith Symposium, “Sex and Power from the Middle Ages to the
Enlightenment.”:

The College of Arts and Sciences brings visiting scholars to present on topics that fall
under “Sex and Power.” Presenters range from CUNY graduate professors to Princeton University professors to professors who teach full time in Florence, Italy. All of the presentations are
free and open to the public.

Elora likes pina coladas and getting caught in the rain...but only warm rain, and especially rain that's packaged in summer thunderstorms! The sophomore magazine journalism and English major is an assistant feature copy editor for SU's independent student newspaper, the Daily Orange, and is a contributing writer for GALA Magazine. She is also a brother in the community service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega. Elora has country music on her iTunes for every possible mood and she will never turn down a Dave Matthews Band concert, a trip to Panera Bread or a pickup soccer game. Although she's not sure exactly what she wants to do after graduation, she hopes to use writing to make a difference in someone's world.
