Spring in Syracuse: Things to do when the weather is finally nice

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Syracuse chapter.

Tinker Falls!

You may not hear the words Syracuse and warm in the same sentence that often.
So, when you do it’s a sign to seize the day. Carpe diem style. Syracuse may be known as
a snowy, cold, wintery city, but that doesn’t mean the springtime doesn’t bring a slew of
opportunities for fun. There is a lot to do not only around campus but around the city as
well.

Tinker Falls – Besides having free admission, which is a plus for any college student,
Tinker Falls is a great place for a good workout. The path to the waterfall is pretty short
but this waterfall isn’t just for looking. You can climb the rocks and stand behind or
if you are brave enough under the waterfall. For the more adventurous type, you can
continue the climb up and stand on top of the waterfall. The view is breathtaking.

Outdoor dining – You have to eat and since you might as well enjoy the warm weather at
the same time, try stopping by the outdoor restaurants in the Syracuse area. Alto Cinco is
a great option. The Mexican style cuisine is inexpensive and there is a lot of room to eat
under the sun or moonlight. If you’re in the mood for a more soup and sandwich dinning
al fresco try A La Mode. Right off of campus the outdoor atmosphere and tasty dinning
makes for a perfect combination.

Drive in movie theatre – About twenty minutes outside of Syracuse, you can go retro
and go to the drive in. The Mid-way Drive In shows two movies a week. They have the
typical old school speakers you can attack to your car door and concession stands with
more than just the average movie snacks. The retro vibe gives viewers a chance to relax
in the warm weather with friends watching the original Hulk movie.

Art Park – In the mood for exercise and beautiful sculptures? Visit the Stone Quarry
Hill Art Park less than 30 minutes from campus. You can stroll along the trails
and discover the bond between art and nature. There are rock sculptures of historical
moments and even some optical allusions along the way.

Onondaga Lake Parkway – Although the lake itself is kind of an eye sore, the area
surrounding the lake is a great place to run, hike and even roller skate. There is even a
volleyball and badminton net to challenge your friends.

Rosamond Gifford Zoo – Even though the zoo is open all year round, it’s probably in the
best favor of both your health and amusement to go when the weather is warm. Between
the penguin feeding time, the open monkey enclosure and the walk through bird forest
the zoo isn’t just for elementary school field trips anymore. Plus you can pet an elephant.

Fairmount Glen Miniature Golf – One of the best miniature golf courses in Central
New York, the Fairmount golf course has a clown face, windmill and even a maze hole
throughout the golf course.

Darien Lakes – If you are up for a slightly long drive go for Darien Lakes. Between the
water park, a suspended looping roller coaster and the only wooden coaster in NY you
are sure to go gaga over all the G-forces. The park also has The Viper, the first roller
coaster in the world to loop riders upside down five times.

Take the time out to enjoy the warm Syracuse weather and seize up the opportunities to
go out and have fun. Between just lying around outside to spinning 360 degrees in a fake
space ship, the words spring and Syracuse fit together perfectly.
