Smoke-free is the way to be

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Syracuse chapter.

Student Association is considering an initiative that would severely limit areas on campus where people could smoke.

I personally feel as though this is a great idea as long as the university actually goes through with it. It’s so disgusting to be coming out of my dorm or the library and be forced to pass through a group of people smoking. The scent does not go away and leaves nonsmoking students inhaling unwanted second hand smoke.

Another down side to campus smokers is the litter that they leave all over this gorgeous campus. I walk by Hall of Languages and the VPA castle on a daily basis. These buildings are the two most beautiful on campus, but the mess of cigarette butts covering the ground in front of them takes away from their beauty.

If secondhand smoke and litter on our campus is not enough to convince you that smoking on campus is bad, how about a fine for smokers from the university? I think we can all agree that tuition is too expensive. A good way for SU to generate revenue would be fining students who are smoking too close to buildings. To ensure that the policy actually got enforced, there would have to be significant security all across SU, including South Campus.

Cancer, smelly clothes, secondhand smoke, and fines? No thank you. A smoke free campus will not only make SU a prettier place but a healthier one as well!
