Alexandra Volcy de Nes: Friend, Daughter, Entrepreneur

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Syracuse chapter.

At first glance, Alexandra Volcy de-Nes seems like a very distinguished woman. Even her name sounds important! And, if you knew her, you know that she’ll be a huge name in the future. She was a member of Syracuse’s Class of 2012, but due to personal reasons she decided to take a break from school. But, unlike other people who spend their breaks from school getting a job or lazing around at home, she decided to start her own business and get her name out there – and the company’s becoming extremely successful!

Stylite Management was concocted by Volcy and her business partner, Brittany Haswell, whom she met through mutual friends after moving to Houston in the summer of 2010, after a few meetings. They figured that with their talents and networks, they could start a company that incorporated most if not all the elements of event production, artist management, and styling. And so far, they’re doing a great job – they have plenty of clients, and have tons of events lined up. But the most impressive fact about Volcy and Haswell are that they’re only in their early to mid-20s. They’re both so young, and yet they’re also starting to become extremely successful.

“The most rewarding thing about starting a business is being able to call something ‘ours’ or ‘mine’,” said Volcy. “Stylite Management is like a child to me now, that I’m helping raise, grow, and flourish.” Her favorite part of the business is seeing finished projects, signed contracts, produced events, and more – the ending “result” from all of her and Brittany’s hard work. But while starting a business can be extremely rewarding, it’s also a risky venture. Volcy had to quit her job and sell her car, just to be able to invest in her own company!

It was also a hard journey, filled with a lot of stress and pressure from herself. “I believe that becoming an entrepreneur, and beginning to invest in various ventures has just made me reevaluate how I trust people, my manner of professionalism, etc.” she said. “I am way more critical of my writing, how I am perceived, how I present ideas, etc than I was before. That may create more stress in a way, but I’d say it is motivational stress.”

And her advice to others looking to start their own business? “Just believe in what you are capable of doing – never doubt. If you doubt yourself, so will others. And in the world of business, first impressions are everything. When you walk into a room, walk in with your head held high and your back straight!” So world, watch out for Alexandra Volcy de-Nes – she’s definitely going to be a big name in the near future!
