6 DIY Halloween Costumes for College Girls That Won’t Break the Bank

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Susqu chapter.

For most girls on a college campus, Halloween is a fun time to get dressed up as anyone or anything that you wish to be. However, we all know that putting together a costume can get expensive. That is why I made a list of 6 DIY costumes that won’t break the bank.

Wednesday Addams

This costume is a classic, and can be easily put together with cheap items that you probably already own. This one works best if you have long dark hair, but anyone can do it with a little temporary black hair dye.

What you need:

– Black t-shirt dress (long or short sleeve will do)

– White collared shirt (just remember to get one with no sleeves if your dress has short sleeves)

– Black Tights

– Black shoes (combat boots work really well)

– Do your hair in two braids with a part down the middle

– Optional: While Wednesday doesn’t wear it, this costume is often paired with a black lip color

– Bonus: Whenever you encounter someone new say, “I’ll stop wearing black when they make a darker color.”

Kim Possible

This one is so easy for anyone to master, even as a last minute costume. Bonus points if you have her hair color, but if not it will still work for anyone (and you could always get temporary hair dye if you feel necessary).

What you need:

– Black long sleeve crop top

– Army green pants (she wears the cargo type pants , but any army green pants will be good)

– Gloves (black or gray)

– Black shoes (combat boots would work well)

– Optional: brown belt

– Bonus: throw in some green colored contacts to get the full effect

M&M’s

This costume is great because it works well with a pair or group of people, or just one person. It is super simple, comfortable, and fun!

What you need:

– Oversized t-shirt corresponding to the color M&M you want to be (red, yellow, orange, blue, green, or brown)

– White letter M printed, glued, or taped to the shirt (that matches the M on an M&M)

– Shoes that are either white or match the color of your shirt (preferred)

– Optional: hair ribbons, head bands, scrunchies, etc. in the color of your shirt

– Bonus: add a lipstick that matches your shirt

Lumberjack

This costume is as simple as it gets, as you most likely already own all of these things. It also has a lot of room for creativity.

What you need:

– Flannel shirt (red is the best option, but any color works)

– Denim jeans or overalls

– Work boots (if you don’t have work boots, converse will work, or really any sneaker type shoe)

– Optional: Bandana tied around your head

– Bonus: carry around a FAKE axe to really make sure everyone knows what your costume is

Alien

This costume is one of my favorites because you can seriously make it work in any way. I am going to share how I have done it in the past, but keep in mind there is always room to change things up and make it your own with what you’ve got.

What you need:

– Galaxy print or shiny shirt

– Either Neon Leggings (these are sold super cheap on amazon) or a galaxy print/shiny skirt

– Crazy Colored Lipstick (blue or purple are my favorites)

– Space buns in your hair (refer to photo)

– Optional: Use dots of colored makeup as “contour”

– Bonus: Glitter. Glitter everywhere.

Regina George from Mean Girls

This costume comes from the scene in the movie Mean Girls when Regina has holes cut in her shirt, and then goes out that way! If you want to channel your inner Regina George, this costume is perfect and super easy.

What you need:

– White tank top with circles cut out (as pictured)

– Purple bra (if you don’t own purple, any color would work)

– Black skater skirt

– Black high heels

– Optional: blonde hair (it’s helpful for the costume, but if you don’t have blonde hair don’t stress! You can still pull off this costume)

– Bonus: Ask everyone the question, “Why are you so obsessed with me?” just like Regina would say

These costumes are all easy to put together, simple, and cheap. They are perfect for a college student, and work really well as a last minute costume.
