Movies

Barbie

Alongside Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie was one of the most anticipated movies of the summer, and it did not disappoint! If you didn’t cry at how sentimental the Barbie movie was for you, congratulations because you’re stronger than me! Post-Barbie, everyone seemed to get the itch to make pink the color of the summer, and I can’t help but agree.

Red, White, and Royal Blue (Prime Video)

The movie adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s beloved novel hit Prime Video this summer and the movie seems to be just as loved as the book. Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zahkar Perez are receiving praise and love all over TikTok for their excellent portrayal of Henry and Alex, and even though fans of the novel are pointing out differences between the book and film, the movie seems to remain true to the source in an admirable way.

Love Again (Netflix)

Starring Priyanka Chopra and Sam Heughan (Of Outlander fame), Love Again fits with other classic, tragic rom-coms that can be watched year-round. Definitely a great watch that I recommend!

Finding You (Prime Video)

Another sappy romance movie! Released in 2021, Finding You follows Finley Sinclair who travels to Ireland in search of inspiration and familial connection. Let’s just say, this movie made me want to study abroad in Ireland even more than I wanted to before watching it.

Love AT First Sight (Netflix)

I think I really just want to take a trip to Europe because I totally divulged into this genre of film so much this summer. This movie is brand new to Netflix and follows both Hadley and Oliver as they travel to the UK from New York. It is set at Christmas, but it was still a perfect end-of-summer movie for me. If you enjoy Love Actually, then this is the movie for you!

Tv Shows

Heartstopper Season 2 (Netflix)

The second season of Heartstopper was highly anticipated by fans of Alice Oseman’s webcomic and the first season alike. I was excited to see how faithful it would stay to the comics, and I’m certainly happy. The Paris Trip was everything I expected and more!

Young Royals (Netflix)

I started Young Royals after finishing Heartstopper, and I’m glad I did! I was late to the Young Royals hype, but Season 3 is coming soon, and I’m glad I got caught up. Edvin Ryding and Omar Rudberg are absolutely amazing, and I absolutely recommend checking it out if you’re also not yet on the Young Royals train yet!

Abbott Elementary (Hulu)

After seeing clips on TikTok, I decided to start watching Abbott Elementary and I absolutely love it! Those who remember Quinta Brunson from her Buzzfeed era will not be disappointed with her work as both the director and Janine for Abbott Elementary!

The Summer I Turned pretty Season 2 (Prime video)

As a book reader, I couldn’t have been more excited to see season 2 of The Summer I Turned Pretty, one of Jenny Han’s many romantic books turned series/movies. The scenes taken directly from the book always make me point at the screen, and say “I’ve heard this before!” Because of this, I recommend reading the book trilogy before watching the show. Whether you’re Team Conrad or Team Jere, this season was full of excitement!

Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 (Hulu and Netflix)

As a faithful Grey’s watcher, I lost track of my weekly watches through midterms and finals, so I watched the newest season of Grey’s over the summer to catch up. Even though many have stopped watching, the new journeys for each of the characters still keep me entertained!

Jury Duty (Prime Video)

I had been hearing about Jury Duty for months and wasn’t expecting how much I would enjoy it. If you’re into psychological things (or are a fan of Impractical Jokers), Jury Duty should be your next watch!

Xo, Kitty (Netflix)

Another hit series for Jenny Han! XO, Kitty follows Kitty Song-Covey, younger sister of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before‘s Laura Jean Song-Covey, as she goes to an International School in South Korea that her mother once attended. It’s really amazing to see Kitty’s life play out because she was just a side character for Laura Jean’s story. Thankfully, Season 2 is confirmed, so fans of this show won’t have to wait long to see more of Kitty!

Music

Niall Horan’s The Show

After seeing Niall at Boston Calling (my first time seeing him since 2015!) I was super excited to be able to listen to some of the songs he played over and over because I immediately was in love with “On a Night Like Tonight.” The Show has a great summery feeling to it. I can’t wait to see Niall again for The Show: Live on Tour in June of next year!

Taylor Swift’s Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)

When it was announced at one of Taylor’s Eras Tour shows that she would be releasing her version of Speak Now, the Swifties were understandably excited. From “When Emma Falls In Love” to “Timeless” to “Electric Touch,” the vault tracks bring something for everyone. Now, we anxiously await 1989 (Taylor’s Version), which is set to release October 27th!

Ella Jane’s Dead Weight (single)

Ella Jane has been viral on TikTok for her songs “nothing else i could do” and “The City,” but I am a fan of her entire discography. After seeing her perform live in October of 2022, I am still obsessed with her music. But her newest single, “Dead Weight,” has such a summery feel, the beat is just something I could dance to!

Infinity Song’s Hater’s Anthem (single)

After going viral for the sped-up, teaser version of Hater’s Anthem, Infinity Song released the song on August 25. While some were angry that the version released was a slower tempo than the group had teased on TikTok, I personally prefer the slower version!

Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts

Even though Guts was not released until September 8th, I still count it as summer because I was screaming and singing to “vampire” and “bad idea right?” all summer! I absolutely adore this album!

Troye Sivan’s Rush (single)

Sivan’s latest single ahead of his new album, Something To Give Each Other (soon to be released on October 13th), is the perfect workout song! Walking around campus or in the gym, you can find me listening to “Rush!”
