Happy Hunger Games!

The much anticipated film, The Hunger Games, based on the trilogy written by Suzanne Collins, was released on March 23, 2012. The film depicts the future of a collapsed North America. It is replaced by Panem, a country divided into twelve districts. Every year, the Capitol chooses a young male and female from each district to participate in the Hunger Games. The televised event depicts the twenty-four participants thrown into an arena and forced to kill their competitors until there is one child standing.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen (whose name is derived from an edible plant species commonly known as arrowhead), is played by Jennifer Lawrence. Katniss volunteers to represent District 12 in place of her sister Primrose. Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, played by Josh Hutcherson, are thrown into the arena and forced to play the Capitol’s twisted Hunger Games.

The Hunger Gamesbroke records in the U.S. box office this weekend. The opening weekend produced $155 million. Do the math collegiettes, this film is now ranked the third best opener in history, closely behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part 2 and The Dark Knight (2008). The film, featuring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Miley’s steamy Australian boy, Liam Hemsworth, debuted in the U.S. making a whopping $19.7 million in the early Friday morning hours. Globally, The Hunger Games has accumulated an estimated $214.25 million outside of the United States.

This film is based on the first book of Suzanne Collins trilogy, The Hunger Games. Gary Ross, the director, phenomenally interpreted the book into a thrilling film. Romance, sci-fi, action, and drama capture the viewer. So go gather a group of friends together and enjoy this enticing film!
