How did you first get involved with yoga?
About 5 years ago a yoga studio was built near my house in Minnesota, and I decided to try it out for the fitness benefits. One of the gurus at the studio ended up taking a special interest in me, and with her encouragement I started attending class every day. I essentially fell in love with the concept of mind-body connection and how relaxed and at peace I felt after practicing. I began teaching yoga as a way to share that feeling with others.
What types of classes do you teach and when are they?
I teach a Vinyasa style yoga class in the SpoCo dance room at 4:15 on Wednesdays. I try to provide a lot of modifications so that everyone can get the most out of the postures, no matter how advanced (or not!) their practice is. I also sub a few yoga classes at Metro South Gym in Brockton.
How do you think yoga helps promote a healthy body image?
An important aspect of yoga is the conscious removal of judgement of others and especially judgement of ourselves. We don’t realize how much we judge ourselves, whether it is through our behaviors or by what we see in the mirror. Just like everyone’s body is different, everyone’s practice looks and feels different, and is completely unique. Without this judgement it is much easier to love our bodies and respect all that they can do.
How else do you you like to stay healthy while on campus?
I love to walk along the pond by myself when it’s nice out. I think that being by yourself for a little bit each day is imperative to self-awareness, and the fresh air is nice too!
Share a fun fact about yourself.
I once broke both my ankles at one time during gymnastics practice.
