The Do’s and The Don’ts: How TO and How NOT to Act at Stetson

Congratulations! High school is finally over and you’re now moving on to bigger and better things. You’re on your own now which give you a sense of freedom and excitement. Yes, your college years will be the best years of your life but sometimes college isn’t all fun and games. It’s tough living on your own while trying to balance homework and a social life. So before you party, gain the freshman 15, kiss a fraternity boy or do anything too embarrassing, The Her Campus Team is here to present you with a list of Do’s and Don’ts for your first year here at Stetson University. Good Luck!

DON’T: Blow schoolwork off for another frat party: There will always be something to do every weekend and many times every day. Whether it’s with a couple of friends or the whole frat house. Pinky promise, if you miss a party you’ll be A Okay.
DO: Put aside time for your academics: This is by far the most important thing you can do. The point of going to college is to get a degree that will help you later on with your career. So take time, choose your classes wisely and go to all of them!

DON’T: Procrastinate: Time management is key. If you are like many other college women, you might put things off until the last minute to hang out with friends or party, but college is hard! Many assignments take days to compete so you need as much time as you can get. Make a schedule or keep a planner it’ll help with keeping you on task.
DO: Find well rounded friends: It’s important to have friends that are not only academically driven but willing to have a little fun with you as well. The statement holds true “you are who you hang out with” so be sure to choose friends wisely.

DON’T: Ignore the first bad grade you get:  talk to you advisor and your professors as soon as you can. Many times, professors have their own way of doing things and their own formats they like to use so if you did bad on an assignment, it may be because you didn’t follow their specific directions. GO and ask to fix the problem.
DO: Get to know your professors: They will be of great assistance to you and if they know who you are, they are willing to cut you some slack. Go to their office hours, introduce yourself and be a familiar face! It could be a difference of a B and an A. Also your TA will be of great assistance to any questions you have in the class. Don’t be shy if you need help ask!

DON’T: Drink your Calories: Think about it, a beer is roughly 200 calories and a cocktail is many times 300! Let’s say you have 5 drinks: That’s a total of 1,500 calories just for drinks! Be careful, be safe and watch those calories.
DO: Eat healthy and workout. With so many temptations all around you and not a lot of time, you might end up eating cookies and cake for breakfast, lunch and dinner. However it’s important, you still make healthy choices. Freshmen 15 is no lie! It happens to the best of us, but if you make healthy eating choices and enroll in a Hollis Center workout class, you’ll be just fine.

DON’T: Waist your money on Alcohol or other illegal substances. Enough said… It is illegal if you are not 21 to drink ANY alcohol and Public Safety will send you to student court if you are caught. Illegal substances are ILLEGAL and you could get expelled from Stetson if caught with any.
DO: Learn to save your money: You’re a college student, you’re on budget now. So make wise decisions on what you purchase. Think before you spend! Especially when it comes to your books. Try not to overpay for your books, when you find out which one you needs look online for them before you buy them in the bookstore. Always check for a cheaper option you can even rent them.

DON’T: Look Trashy. If you think that college is all about looking sexy around campus think again. Stetson is a very prestigious school with many intelligent and classy students so if you are trying to get attention by dressing trashy, think again!
DO: Look Classy. First impressions are everything. It’s important to keep your sense of style along with keeping it classy and school appropriate. Your professors and your peers will respect a tasteful sense of style.

DO: YOLO
