What to do When You Hate a Professor

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Vincent chapter.

Professors…some you love and some you completely despise. The professors who get it, the ones who understand what you are going through are simply the best. But the other professors, the ones who simply do not seem to care about teaching or their students are not helping anyone, including themselves. We have all been there whether it comes to loving or hating a professor, and yes, we have all survived. But really what is there to do when we cannot stand a professor? There is not a “right” answer to this question but there are certain steps that can be taken to ensure that you make it through the semester with a terrible professor.

Try not to get discouraged

Tell yourself to not let their attitude or pointless stories get to you. Chances are, they are unsure of how to teach and they chose to take this job as a learning experience. They will learn to make the most of it and soon enough, you will learn some valuable information. But you have to pay attention in order to do that. So, stay in it and don’t shy away.

Put your phone away

Believe it or not, they can see you sitting on your phone all class and chances are, they are annoyed by it. Do not pull your phone out and try to pay attention to whatever the professor is saying because you can’t learn much information by scrolling through Twitter.

Ask questions

If something confuses you during class, as a question. Get to the bottom of whatever is confusing you and you may find that it could have been a little miscommunication. You may never know if the miscommunication is on your part or the professors unless you ask.

Review class notes

During class you may have a hard time listening to the professor but take time to review after class. Look over your notes from the class and decipher what was said. It will spark an understanding that you would not get otherwise.

Evaluate your professor

At the end of each semester you are asked to evaluate your professors. They are completely anonymous and it is the perfect platform to let out your feelings. At this point, you already made it through the semester and you will most likely never have to see or speak to the professor again so take the time to explain what the hardships were. Your professor will take it as constructive criticism and future students will not have to deal with the same issues you did.

Keep your head up and remember that you are ultimately paying for your education so it is up to you to make the most out of even the worst professors.
