Do Something for You

Do Something for You!

College is stressful, that’s no secret. When you’re constantly tense and living from one assignment to the next, it’s important to make time in your busy schedule for the most important person in your life: yourself. A hobby that allows you to unwind is essential if you plan to make it out of school alive. Here are 10 things you can try out as you attempt to find your personal definition of “me time.”

1. Photography

Capture the moment and make your Instagram more ‘follow-worthy’ than ever before. College is a time for you to create amazing memories and this is a great way to make sure you remember all the fun times you had on your study breaks!

2. Origami

All you need is paper and some online instructions. This is a great way to take a few minutes for yourself. Bonus points if you make your first creation out of that homework assignment that stressed you out SO MUCH last week.

3. Calligraphy

It’s beautiful, simple, and fun… what’s not to love? We all spent years learning how to write in cursive (and let’s be real, none of us were particularly good at it), so this should be a piece of cake! Plus, think of how gorgeous your notes and birthday cards will be.

4. Sports

Athletics are a great way to relieve tension and take your mind off of things. There’s a sport for everyone, so get creative. Buy a Frisbee, start running, try a more uncommon sport like rugby or skateboarding. Anything goes, just have fun.

5. Reading

A good book, candlelight (just not in your dorm), and a warm drink is a recipe for relaxation. Whether you’re revisiting an old favorite, picking up a classic, or reading the latest romance novel, “me time” has never been more comfortable.

6. Volunteering

Giving back to others is a great way to get life back in perspective. Join a club based on volunteering, get in touch with a local nursing home, start working with Habitat for Humanity. Caring for others easily transforms into caring for yourself.

7. Cooking

There’s nothing better than a good home-cooked meal when things get rough, and it’s even better if you share it with friends. Look for a recipe online, run to the store for ingredients, and sit down for a relaxing dinner/snack.

8. Hiking

Walk until you’re surrounded by nature. Take in the beauty of the world around you and I guarantee all your stresses will seem a bit more minor.

9. Playing an instrument

Music is calming, both when you’re listening to it and when you’re playing it. There’s no better place to lose yourself than in a melody. Start taking lessons if you’ve never learned to play before or get back into an old hobby. The only way to learn is to try. Apparently, there’s an instrument for everyone.

10. Juggling

This just seems like a great party trick if I’m being truthful. Plus, it’ll be even more impressive when you learn to juggle strange items.

If none of these suit your fancy, find something else. There are a million things you can do. There’s something out there to put everyone at ease; finding your ‘thing’ can be part of the fun. Laugh when you fail, get your friends involved, and find something you love to do.

I'm Megan Miller, a senior Psychology/Sociology double major and Children's Studies minor. You can find me giving campus tours, kicked back in the Fred Rogers Center, or on a date with my homework at the local coffee shop. If there's one thing you need to know about me, it's that I approach every day with one goal: make Michelle Obama proud.

St Vincent '18

Hello there! I am the Campus Correspondent of the Her Campus chapter at Saint Vincent College. As a senior psychology major, I've made the most of my time in undergrad and am excited for all the doors I have opening ahead of me. I can definitely thank Her Campus for giving me invaluable skills. As a future psychologist, I hope that my articles (and the chapter's) are able to make you feel empowered, motivate you to start a conversation, and be kind. As a hero of mine has said, "If you do not take control over your time and your life, other people will gobble it up. If you don't prioritize yourself, you constantly start falling lower and lower on your list."- Michelle Obama. Be the change you want to see in the world, and smile. Always smile!
