Whether you love it or you hate it, that time of year is here again- Valentine’s Day. If you needed a reason to wear more pink and/or sparkles, this is your excuse. Chances are that at this point, if you are in a relationship (and maybe even if you are single!), you probably already have plans for the Big Day. If not, however, Mmm Ya Ya has some tips to make Valentine’s Day sweeter than the icing on a red velvet cupcake!

If you have a special somebody:

  1. It is supposed to snow on Thursday, so maybe go out and play in the snow like small children. No matter how grown-up you think you are, you cannot deny how fun it is to go Caf sledding down Old Main hill.
  2. On a sexier note, you could get some body chocolate (or just chocolate syrup) and experiment bringing some food into your sex life. Instead of getting each other cards, use chocolate to write personal notes on each other’s bodies. Just don’t get it near your special lady parts, unless you want an excuse to not have sex for a while.
  3. Take “candid” (read: hipster) pictures of each other all day on Instagram, competing to see who can come up with the cheesiest caption.
  4. Leave Post-It notes for your honey bunny in random places- his/her backpack, PO, desk, etc. Each one should have a different memory of the two of you that you cherish. They don’t have to be major moments; it could be as simple as “The time we cuddled and watched 3 seasons of Friends” or “When we burnt the batch of cookies, but it was OK because we already ate half of the dough anyway.”

If you are single:

  1. Spend the night listening to Taylor Swift and crying into a box of SweetHearts. JK. (But seriously, does anyone actually like SweetHearts?)
  2. Find a singles party to go to – if there isn’t anything going on Thursday night, you can always get your grind on at the Grand on Friday!
  3. Have your non-single friends set you up on a blind date with someone they know. It could be really fun to get to know someone over dinner or coffee, even if you maybe have seen them around campus before. You never know- you might end up striking up a really great new friendship or more! Or, if not, you at least will come out of the date with a story that you and your friends can laugh about for the next few Valentine’s Days to come.
  4. Go over to Carleton for dinner. Our meal plans work in their cafeteria, so if you feel like you have exhausted all of the options on this side of the river, maybe go check out what they have to offer.

Alternatively, you can drink a few glasses of wine, then run around campus and yell “ARE YOU SINGLE?!” at every non-coupled person you see, which is probably what I will be doing.

Happy Valentine’s Day, St. Olaf,

H.
